Odd Battery State

Ok, so I was driving home from Asia's b'day dinner in A2 last night. New  tank of gas with only a few dozen miles on it. Decided to take the highway, 'cuz I was tired and wanted to get home.

When I got on the highway the battery was full and the average MPGs at that point was 38. I set the eco-cruise to 65 and relaxed into the ride home. A few minutes/miles later I look down and the battery was still over 3/4 full and was neither charging nor discharging. It was fairly flat terrain. Stayed that way for about a minute, then began to discharge. It did this several more times on the way home. The battery stayed high for the whole trip, until I exited the freeway and cancelled Eco-Cruise.

Also, the average MPGs had crept up to 40, and by the time I was home it read 42.6! When I shut the car off, the Trip Summary read 44.2mpg for the 15.2 mile trip, with about 12 of it on the freeway.

Jus, is this your Ice High MPG?

Oh, yeah, and I saw a White C-Max on the way to work today. Actually the driver saw me first and honked....we both waved and grinned.......kindred spirits on the road :hi5:

I think I have seen that from time to time.  Maybe it is some sort of meditative zen state where everything is in perfect balance - or maybe something is stuck or confused.  I will watch to see if I observe this on the highway.

I LIKE that!!! Perfect balance and harmony works for me!

I've seen this in the FFH. Whenever the ICE is running the MG1 is turning through the eCVT there is either electricity being generated to charge the battery or the MG1 is using electricity to assist the electric motor. Since the arrows indicate if the battery is charging or discharging a lack of arrows indicates that the SOC of the battery is constant. My theory is that this happens when the electricity drawn to charge the 12V battery is exactly the same as the electricity being generated through the eCVT spinning MG1.

My highway drive to/from work has many hills, up and down all different grades from very subtle to quite steep. I set the Eco Cruise to about 70 mph. The first 3-4 miles I get very poor MPG in the low 20 range with the battery showing charge. At the start of the highway drive, I am typically under 60% and have been as low as 20%, so this state can last even longer. Once the battery gets up to the 80% area, I see the MPG start to climb and bounce around. On a dead level road (hard to find in So Cal) it seems to sir just over 50 MPG to maintain 65-70 mph. I am running the tires at 45-48 psi which is helping here. As the grade changes, I see the battery go from charging to nothing to discharging. It seems to try and keep the gasoline usage fairly constant and use some electric boost to climb slight hills and then draw some from the cars momentum to recharge the battery when you go down the next hill. I see it go into the perfect zen no charge state fairly often, but due to the hills, it can't stay there long.

OHHHMMMMM

Resistance is the enemy, it is the cause of most of the energy loss between the battery and motor.
