Damnit, I hear the AC noise now....this is going to Galpin to look at as well. It's annoyingly bad.

You mean your A/C was quiet before?  Mine has always sounded like a chain saw.

No, I had it on but had my windows up so naturally with the noise cancellation I did not hear it. U know, windows up to keep the cool air in....but last night, I was playing with the new MFT 3.6 and turned on the AC with both windows down - and in the garage - so the sound got magnified & it was crap. I turned it on with the windows down this evening and heard the same thing....

Now, did you take yours in and see if the SA can do anything about it?

Ah, I noticed it because I use remote start so I approach the vehicle with it running.

I never took it in for that because I always assumed it was normal because other people reported the same. I figured it has the added bonus of alerting people so they don't walk in front of me  :detective:

I often pull away from parking with all windows open, blowing out the even hotter air out into the hot outside air.  I hear that noise.  It starts within two to five seconds, pretty much immediate but building speed.  Since all seems to be working fine, and with all of the reports of the noise turning out to be normal, I stopped worrying about it.

You would think that either the GPS or the paired phone would set the time.

I walked by a Prius V (which has, I believe, the same new electronic compressor) as it was starting up, and it was making the same noise. It may just be a drawback of these electronic compressors.

On the other hand, when I turn on the car, with AC off, in silent start mode (no ICE), and have my foot on the brake, I'd swear I'm hearing the same thing, but a lot quieter. So I'm wondering if it's something to do with pumping coolant to the inverter? The brake booster is powered by the high-voltage battery as well, no?

Mine too. So did my 2007 Camry hybrid and my 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid. I think my C-Max might not be as loud as the Fusion was. I just ignore it as the AC works very well

When it first starts up they are pumping a lot of power into that compressor, I've seen 4KW on my gauge. For comparison a normal window air conditioner in a house is limited to about 1.4KW due to the 115V outlet. No wonder it's so loud!

New to forum. Have had C-Max 10 months or so and have same issues. I have the noise (very loud) when starting up and in electric mode. Also, A/C not functioning as others have described. What happens to us it that we'll get cold air on driver side, and often blow heat on passenger side. If not heat, will be outside air. It can be fixed by leaving A/C on, but turning car off for a good 10 seconds to (apparently) reboot. Will generally work after that, although we don't generally get really cold A/C. I say 'generally' as we've had A/C working fully and sending in really cold air, both side.

Of course, dealer can find nothing wrong with anything. I don't know what to do.

As an aside, we're getting 41.5 mpg in a lot of suburban-type driving and highway. The trick to staying in electric mode, as I would assume most would know, is to be gentle on the accelerator. Heavy foot, cruddy mileage. I can run around town mostly in electric mode if I'm careful on the gas.

We took the C-Max in for the PCM update and roof headliner fix, had them look at the buzzy A/C also. They checked oil & refrigerant levels, made sure there were no leaks or kinks in the lines, then did something unusual: we walked out onto the lot and fired up 3 brand-new C-Max'. Bottom line: they all buzz like this on startup if the A/C is on. My theory is that most new owners simply didn't notice it at first since you don't hear it inside the car with the windows up.

So I have stopped worrying about it.

The A/C unit is an electric pump. All pumps make noise while pumping ;)  As for the dealer checking the oil level,

that's a B/S statement. The only way to check oil level is to drain the oil in the compressor and capture the rest from the

Freon and measure them together.  Not gonna happen. I really doubt they even checked it. It's easiest to compare it

to another unit like they did. Showing the customer proof is the best way to resolve a NON issue, issue. Otherwise, they'll

always have doubts and continue to pursue the noise as a problem. Happy Motoring :love_shower:

true they make some noise, but when they sound like a weed whacker that can be head in the cabin of the car and by the people in the car next to you there is an issue. Took it into the dealer, dealer fork lifted the A/C per tech, replaced and no noise anymore

Yes! They did have a TSB for noise issue's due to leaks.  I never heard mine, so I'll just continue to enjoy it.

I rarely use A/C here anyways.

We bought our new C-Max Energi  a few days ago and with 140 total miles on the vehicle we noticed "The Noise" as did our neighbor who owns a Prius !  Granted I did tell them that our C- Max was a Prius killer so without a doubt  the "Game" is on !  ...I honestly thought an animal crawled in the engine compartment. I headed to the internet and this forum. So far I have called Ford customer support and they told me I had to go through the local dealer. I'll touch base and post findings as they progress !  until then ....we live with this ridiculous

Update to dreaded C-Max "Dead squirrel" under the hood sound:  Called ford national customer service ..they informed to go back to dealer ...I went to the dealer.. they listened to the noise and wrote up a notation on the work order as " No fix currently available from ford"
The maintenance manager was great and said he has no way to help... ok ...I'm am currently back on hold with Ford national customer service and looking for more data, and an engineer to talk to !
I will paste this info and suggest everyone with this issue to please please call and at least let them know you want it fixed..or it will never be taken care of.....more to come.....

The C-Max uses a scroll compressor, so this link may help with identifying compressor noise:  http://www.youtube.c...h?v=hapg3FbD9Es

The scroll compressor on our car isn't nearly as noisy as the scroll compressor for our house.

They sound the same.

Hi All,

I just joined this forum today.  I have had my CMAX for 1 year now.  I love it!  It is so much more fun to drive than my minivan.  However, I do not like the loud sound it makes when the AC is on.  I bought it in October 2012.  It was cool then, so no need to use the AC.   Then in the late spring I had to use the AC and heard a really loud noise. It was very noticeable with the windows down.  I agree with many of you that we didn't hear it initially because of the sound proof windows.  Finally, in June I took it to the dealer (it is about 40 min. from my house) and they replaced the air compressor and lines.  They had it for two weeks.  I brought it home and could still hear the loud buzzing.  I took it in again for the same problem.  They gave me a rental car, thank goodness.  After having my car for 2 weeks in the shop they had me come down so that I could show them what the problem was.  It was 105 degrees that day.  So I get there and at first it was making the humming noise and they were trying to convince me that it was normal and then steering wheel started vibrating with the air on.  This time they had it for a total of 5 weeks!!!!  Unbelievable!!!!!  It is not vibrating now, but I still think it is loud when the AC is on.  The noise usually stops after 5 minutes or so. I wish I had known about this forum earlier. I thought that I might be the only one having this experience.   Definitely call Ford Customer Service.  You will get a claim number and tell you what to do next.  Good luck to all!!!
