Heat shield under car, near exhaust, likely protecting battery...

So, how important do you think that is? Because I kind ran over a large rock, and, uhm...

...that happened.

I imagine that can just be bent back into shape and secured with heat-resistant tape, right? Like, the kind that's used to wrap exhaust headers. Should be no big deal, right?

I was trying to research your question, but only came up with these comments on a car forum :

A heat shield works to limit both radiation and convection. In winter the upper heat shield will help retain heat to keep the converter hot so that it will function properly and it will also help keep the surrounding area cooler. The next lower small triangular shaped shield appears to be located so that it protects the rubber CV joint boot, etc.

If you run without the shields in place, eventually the reason for their existence will become apparent.

So it sounds like a proper repair is called for--sorry for the problem.  Bummer.

Oh, yeah, a repair is definitely called for. I would never leave that as is. My question is really: Do you think the whole shield needs to be replaced, or do you think it can be bent back into shape and fixed with heat tape? I'm guessing the latter would be fine.

I'll be finding out from a mechanic ASAP, but I haven't had the time yet. I do consider the problem minor enough that I can wait until my schedule allows repairing, but still serious enough that repairing it all is non-negotiable. That WILL be happening.
