Highest MPG CMax Club (minimum 500 miles)

Recorded a 500 mile tank! Will have to wait till next summer to try to get 600. My question is the EV miles displayed pure EV only, or a combination of pure EV and assisted EV ?

That one is the same for Energi and Hybrid. It is the number of actual miles driven in EV, that is, no ICE. The Energi has other considerations, which aren't important here.

Surpeise: usually the C-Max display always shows less gas than actually fill up.

Ā

Today, my tank showed using 13.43 gal in the picture, but Costco gas station showed I only added 12.466 gal, which brings the actual number to 57.4 mpg! Interesting......

Be interesting to see what your next tank is. :)

Sure you didn't add a gallon sometime along the way?Ā  The display will just keep accumulating gallons used until reset - it could read 100 gallons.Ā  Or.... have you been boasting about how good your mileage is?Ā  Someone might be sneaking some extra gas in there for fun!Ā  It has happened!Ā  My dad told of a guy way back, like in the '60s, who had a VW bug or such, and kept talking up his great gas mileage so his co-workers started sneaking out and adding a bit of fuel periodically.Ā  The guy became ecstatic about how great his mileage was!Ā  Now that's a hilarious (and meritorious!) practical joke.

No extra refill for sure, since I drive the car most of the time, and my kids won't touch gas. I did not even mention (embarrassingly) that the gas was actually spilled out when I refilled, so it is definitely a full refill.

Ā

I think there are several factors:

Ā

(1) My gas gauge might not be accurate, but was not that much different. I expected to use more than 13 gal for the 710 miles, and was a little surprised that the yellow warning was barely start to show up and I still had about 45 miles left on the gauge. That would bring an error (variation) about 1 gal, which is not abnormal.

Ā

(2) I have been driving an alternative route to send kid to summer job. While the overall distance increased daily (thus 2 weeks instead of 3 weeks for that tank), the overall freeway speed (50 mph) plus relative flat latitude (Rt 34 instead of Merritt parkway in CT) are optimal for EV driving.

Ā

(3) I visited repair shop in June to address an issue of slow leak of one tire. Turned out that there was a nail! They fixed it and my tire warning was gone (annoyingly lighting up every two months for a year).Ā

Ā

(4) The "low" freeway speed enabled me to open windows most of the time instead of using AC, I noticed more close to to top 50 or even low 60 MPG readings after every ~15 mile drive (using 0.2 gal), literally half way from home to New haven, and then to work, back and forth.

Ā

(5) Summer weather is helping: not too many hot/humid days so far, and I chose to drive C-Max during a better days :)

Currently at 470 miles, filled up at the beginning of the month. Still have 200 miles to empty! Wow! And this is running on E15! Average MPG display is going between 51.8 - 52.2 MPG

In theory you could make it to 700 mi.Ā  :) Ā 470 mi. + 200 mi.= 670 mi to 0 mi. to E + 30 mi. after 0 mi. Ā Now if you checked your odometer it's probably off by around 1.018%, if you check it with portable GPS. So doing the Ā math 670 mi. X 1.018% = 682 mi., Ā so you would only need to get 18 mi. after 0 mi. to make 700 mi.Ā  :) Ā I filled up this afternoon with 717 mi./ 13.8g/ 51.95 mpg. actual Fuelly mileage. :) Ā My Smart Gauge had 704.4 mi./12.92 gal./ 54.4 mpg. I went 4 clicks on the pump and I'm using Premium 93 octane gas, BTW I went about 25 mi. pass 0 mi. to E. To be on the safe side I would carry a 1 to 2 gal. gas can if you decide to do this for Ā the first time. :)

Ā

Just a reminder that if you need to put gas in the car there is a funnel in the back under the cover on left side that you need to put in the filler tube so you can put gas in the car. :) Ā It makes a big mess if you don't.

Thanks for your tips! I don't have a GPS, but if I see a cheap one I might pick it up.Ā

Ā

Found the filler tube when I first found the car. Personally not a fan of the capless system. Plus I also found the portable air compressor. That could definitely come in handy.

Ā

Had to go jumpstart my partner's work van. He killed the battery when he left his hazard lights on :( . Was a really horrifying experience as I've never done it before.

Well, I didn't quite make it to 600 like I was hoping. If only I had driven around the neighborhood a few more times! My thoughts are with those affected by now Tropical Storm Harvey. We're starting to feel the effects of the storm here, in the form of higher gas prices. $2.50 a gallon. Still really cheap compared to what I grow what remembering, but still higher than recently.

Joined the 500-mile club on my 2nd full gas tank and only hope to get better... our area of SoCal is full of hills, so that puts a damper on EV mode a lot. Plus, I did a lot of highway driving on quite the inclinesĀ  :sad:Ā  The first quarter tank or so was also my dad drivingĀ  :thud:

Ā

1st gas tank was driven by my dad who was borrowing the car and he is NOT a "hybrid" driver lol. He loves the gas pedal too much and is also hard on the brakes lol.

Bought my C Max in August 2015.Ā  Had 24 mpg on car at that time.Ā  I did not not do a reset and now I it reads 44.0 mpg for over a total of 92703 miles.Ā  This is combined city ( local courier ) and highway ( longest one way trip of 724 miles ) at speeds mostly 65 to 75 mph.Ā  Even with towing my boat for 150 miles on highway...
