Ford C-MAX Monthly Sales Chart

Well, I didn't say "people really want expensive, short range and slow-to-charge electric cars" - just "electric cars".  (Of course price, range and charge times need to improve.)  But most people don't yet know they want an electric car because they haven't experienced one yet.  Its like the "no shift" transmission in the C-Max - I had no idea how nice it would be until I had one for a while.  Or how nice it really is to sit in a traffic jam (!) with everything running except the ICE.  Some things have to be experienced before you realize you really want them.  We're in a transition period.  There's a lot of ICE - it will take a long time to melt!

Autonomous cars will bring many more "driving" scenarios - and many of these (short trips, waiting in queues) will be far more suited to electric propulsion - either pure or hybrid.  Or with wireless charging or an auto-connect capability, it can go off during the day, get charged and then come back and get you.  The cars can move in and out of charging station automatically so chargers never sit idle.  With auto-charge at home you will soon completely forget about "fueling" your car - or changing the oil!.  One car can take several family members to work and school - try that for cost savings...

Oh no - just woke up - must have been dreaming - still chained to the gas pump - still a slave of big oil - didn't have "insider" insight....

398 C-MAX Hybrid sold and 571 C-MAX Energi Hybrid sold in October 2016 for a total of 969 combined.

These numbers will undoubtedly be used to 'justify' why Ford is moving future C-MAX (or replacement) hybrid production to Mexico.

So NO advertising COMBINED WITH NO significant updates for 5 model years is the best way to sell these vehicles?

It is really disappointing to me that they never updated the styling, at the same time they updated the European C-Max.

Thought I posted this yesterday.  Perhaps I did not click "post."

Interestingly, Energi sales have surpassed Hybrid sales for the first time.

There has been "handwriting on the wall" in the trends indicating that this would happen eventually, but I did not expect it to occur quite this soon.

Interesting,  I wonder if the new Energy SE trim level is helping with that?   Does this new model offer a lower base price?

I think the new Energy SE is out now, correct?

I did a quick inventory check of the Greater Atlanta and only found two Hybrids and one Energi in stock and a few more on order. Apparently FORD isn't making any yet or atleast shipping them.  It would appear that most dealers don't have them and FORD isn't encouraging  them to order.  To me it looks like the lack of sales is caused by the lack of availability. IMO

811 C-MAX Hybrids and 721 C-MAX Energi Hybrids sold during November 2016 for a combined total of 1532.

That's the first year-over-year combined sales increase since September 2015, and the first November combined sales gain in the 51-month history of the US-built C-MAX.

A modest 5% year-over-year gain in combined sales of 1454 matches Ford's overall 5% sales gain for the month of November.

The month-over-month combined gain is an astonishing 58%, so perhaps last month's lowest-ever combined sales were a result of low dealer inventory.

2184 combined December 2016 sales, 23rd best month in the 52-month history of the C-MAX line in the US.

895 C-MAX Hybrids sold.

1289 C-MAX Energi Hybrids sold, the BEST EVER sales numbers since the the C-MAX Energi went on sale in October 2012. Even surpasses the 1285 sold (primarily to rental fleets at that time) in November 2012.

Headline from the Rodney Dangerfield "No respect, no respect" News Department:

Despite selling more C-MAX Energi Hybrids than any prior month of production, it does not even get mentioned in the boilerplate December 2016 sales press release from Ford!

Truly, Ford is a truck company (nearly 90,000 F-150's sold again in December!)

January 2017 update

473 C-MAX Hybrids and 473 C-MAX Energi Hybrids for 946 combined sales.

For perspective, combined C-MAX sales are just 57,049 fewer than Ford F150 sales for the month of January 2017.

To put it another way, Ford sells as many F150's in two months as the entire combined US C-MAX sales in the 53 months since introduction. Is it any wonder Ford has announced plans for a Hybrid F150.

53rd and absolute lowest combined sales ever, 2nd lowest Hybrid sales ever, lowest Energi sales ever.

This follows December 2016 that was the best Energi sales month ever, and one of the best combined months in a while.

I guess some really great Ford incentives expired at the end of December!

For the first time since I've been following monthly sales reports, Ford attached tables showing the breakout between retail sales and fleet sales.

February 2017 Update

676 C-MAX Hybrid and 639 C-MAX Energi Hybrid sales for a total of 1315.

I haven't been in the market for a new C-MAX since we purchased our 2013 SE in early 2014, so I haven't paid much attention to the current models on sale, but I received a brochure for the 2017 C-MAX in the mail today.

I was surprised and pleased to note that Ford added a C-MAX Hybrid Energi SE model to the 2017 line-up (as well as Platinum top-of-the-line, replacing the SEL, apparently), and, like our C-MAX Hybrid SE, cloth seats are standard.
I would have quite likely purchased an Energi with cloth seats, had they been available in 2014. Now, I'll probably just wait a couple of years until there are a good selection of used 2017 Energi SE's to choose from.

Full March 2017 update with table and charts now posted.

In a month when Ford combined sales dropped 7%, 671 C-MAX Hybrids and 662 C-MAX Energi Hybrids sold during March 2017, with a combined total of 1,333, down 22% from prior-year March sales.

Truck sales are up 10%.

Ford Fusion Hybrid had it's best sales month ever in March 2017, with 5865 sold.

It was the best-selling hybrid in the US in March 2017, even outselling the Prius Liftback, according to hybrid cars.com.

Ford Fusion Energi Hybrid sold 1002 units.

So Ford Fusion Hybrids are selling in decent numbers, just not that many Ford C-MAX Hybrids.

For quite some time I have been watching the slow convergence of the Energi and Hybrid sales.   Look at the 6-month average curves provided by Kostby.

In the early months, the Hybrid outsold the Energi by a factor of 6, but since then the Hybrid sales have been on a significant long term decline with annual bumps;  the Energi sales, less so.  Last year the Energi sales started a bit of an upward trend.  It looked like the two would converge.  Now for the last few months they have indeed converged.  In fact, over the last 6 months the Energi outsold the Hybrid 5044 to 4663.

Interesting to speculate as to why.

Will the recent trends continue?

FIT credit is around $4,000 for the Energi and Ford has been discounting the Energi significantly more than the Hybrid (currently at $1,000).  So the Energi after taxes and incentives is less expensive than the Hybrid.

Since Kostby has the data organized, perhaps we could impose on him to plot the ratio0 or the difference between the two (Hybrid and Energi 6-month average curves.

That might shed some light.

Edit:  As I think about it, I suppose that the ratio would be the most meaningful.

Why?

All you need to do is look at the pricing structure of the C-Max Energi vs Hybrid over time.  For MY 2013, the Energi was about $2200 more than the Hybrid SEL and around $5000+- more than the Hybrid SE.  Also, IIRC any incentives for the C-Max were about the same for both models. For MY 2014, the FIT credit for the Energi was increased by about $260 and Ford began giving more incentives on the Energi than the Hybrid.  This has been discussed many times in the past which virtually made the Hybrid SEL and Energi about the same cost to the consumer

For MY 2016 Ford came out with the Energi SE priced lower than the Energi Titanium. So, now the Energi with FIT credits is less costly for the SE line and the Titanium line.   Hence, unless one wants more cargo space, many will likely buy the Energi over the Hybrid since it has been less expensive than the Hybrid for several years after tax.

Space was my biggest motivator going from 2010 FEH to CMAX, lost some usable space. Otherwise I would have gotten an NRG.

BTW that money comes off your TAXES so you have make enough to be able to deduct it.

Paul

Unless you lease. Then the money comes off the purchase price. I'm leasing my 2016 for three years, then buying it on a three year load. Actually cheaper than buying it out right.
