Battery Low, Radio Turns Off

Yesterday I drove 70 miles to court. I guess the battery should be charged.

Later I returned to the car and listened to the radio. About 5 minutes later, the radio turned off itself. Shortly after I turned the radio on again, I saw message on the radio screen "Battery Low, Radio Turns Off"

I drove the car for about 10 miles and then try to pair my cell phone. Saw the same message and the radio turned off before I could finish pairing my phone.

This morning I find out the battery is below 12 V. Charging system seems normal.

Now my car is in the dealership. They have to keep my car for testing and give me a loaner for 2 days.

I purchased my SE in August 2013. Now it got 28,000 miles on the meter and never have a battery problem.

Recently I had the SYNC update.

I have an SE with MFT.  After an update to MFT I had the same issue.  Dealer had to reprogram the car and I think there is a TSB on this.  Mine happened the same day as the update.

I use this 12V monitor: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EVWDU0/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I place it in receptacle by rear hatch (which is always powered). You can place in it front receptacle, but that one shuts off after about 10 minutes.

When I exit vehicle I check 12V monitor. As the electronic modules power down, the voltage should start to slightly rise approximately 10-20 seconds after vehicle turn-off.  If it does not, that indicates something is stuck on and is drawing current. A few times in the last 1.5 years this has happened to me (voltage would continue to drop below 12.0 V). When this occurred, I just started vehicle for a few minutes and shut off. This apparently would un-stuck whatever refused to power off, and voltage would then rise normally after turnoff.

My radio stopped working the day before I got my dead battery issue.

I was told by Ford service that the car acts like humans and that it focuses on core systems to get you where you need to be first before failing completely by shutting off non-essential things like the radio.

  • 7 months later...

This may have been solved but the first time I saw this on my 2013 it really was my battery having issues but when I noticed it again there was a new answer [and the battery was o.k]. Apparently its a new satisfaction update last year when the MPG suits started and they added this in to keep the battery from going flat. My dealer said that as long as you keep the car in accessory mode it shouldn't turn the battery off.

On a side not at least the 2016 does have an override option on the dash when it starts to do this and you just press the o.k when it warns you. I assume though if your battery does go dead doing the override , I'd be sure they have a way to say "its your fault" and find a way to charge you for charging up your battery.
