hybrid / energi compatablility

There are people that have had to have their 2013 C-Max transmissions replaced.  There was a design change on the transmission, probably late 2013 to correct a design problem.  Are you having a problem ?

 

In one of the threads about a taxi having a trans replaced someone writes about one difference, the energi trans oil constantly pumps, while the hybrid trans oil only pumps when the engine is on.  

 

I also kind of vaguely suspect/recall the final ratio to the wheels is higher but don't bet the house on that.

Maybe, but they had some definite reason for the different end ratios, and the software is calibrated for the Energi settings.

 

I'm guessing that FORD wanted to improve acceleration with the additional 300lbs of weight. Odometer might be off too. :shift:  :)

I recall reading (maybe Ford or reviewers) that the numerically higher ratio for the Energi was to enable about the same acceleration performance as the Hybrid (given the Energi is a heavier vehicle than the Hybrid).  

 

The torque demand would be higher for the Energi when both are accelerating from the same speed.  My guess is there is a physical limitation with the transmission / ICE / motors planetary gear system that prevents the Energi from delivering more torque to the wheels to match the Hybrid acceleration without the higher final drive gear ratio even though the transmission is billed as an infinitely variable drive system.  My guess is also that in normal driving the software optimizes the overall gear ratio.  It would make sense then that the software is calibrated for the specific vehicle.

 

It would be interesting to record data from a Hybrid and Energi (in Hybrid operation mode) at the same time when accelerating side by side or perhaps an Energi and two hybrids (one Hybrid 300 pounds heavier). :)

All plausible. It could also have to do with the fact that the Energi can store more energy when driving, for example it will not max out in EV Later like a hybrid will do (assuming a long downhill or decelleration).

My Cmax was totalled in an accident and consequently the transmission lost fluid while driving.

Long story short, I ended up using a transmission from another hybrid.

 

The car seems to run fine now.

 

The issue that I am having now is that it is difficult the shift out of park, all the way down to drive.

Also, I can't shift into Low gear.

 

The shifter moves smoothly anywhere from drive up to Park.

 

I disconnected the linkage at the transmission and the shifter will shift smoothly while it is not connected to the transmission.

Something is not right in the linkage adjustment. ;)   We talked about this on High Transmission Temperature in General Discussion Post # 89. :)
