Pssst, Canada is on sale

Recommended Posts

Some savvy car buyers have discovered that buying a used car in Canada may be a good deal;  with the exchange rate for United Statesians as it is, it is like 30% off north of the border.  Of course, if you import a vehicle, there are some additional steps you have to take.

For example, here are some used C-Max in Ontario (I use Kijiji.ca or autotrader.ca)  http://www.kijiji.ca/b-cars-trucks/ontario/ford-c+max/c174l9004a54a1000054

I almost bought the one for sale in Grimsby (they had to do a warranty brake repair and couldn't fix it in time for me).

(the link is temporary but you get the idea).

cheers.

First one I saw was a 2015 "off lease". Wonder how that is possible.

What are the additional steps to import a car to the US? How do you go about changing out the speedometer?

The speedometer has both kph and mph on the same dial (one set is just smaller than the other).  MPG and L/100 km and F vs C can also be chosen in display options.  Plus you get day-time running lights!

You should google the import requirements; I  would imagine that enough people do it that the requirements are not onerous.

I don't think it would be too difficult, so long as the car is also sold in the US. Some of their models are Canada only and have not been crash or emissions tested for the US.

The EPA has a site for this as well.

Might be a great idea Louder North (at least for the foot loose and braver hearts).  Here are some used ones in the BC area.
http://www.autotrader.ca/cars/ford/c-max/?prx=-1&prv=Ontario&loc=M9C+5J1&sts=Used-Damaged&hprc=True&wcp=True&inMarket=advancedSearch

And this low miles 2013 SEL (below) for  $22,777  CAD or roughly $16,000 USD.
That's for an SEL with less than 10,000 miles on it !!!
(Where the heck is Lacombe ?  SEL 303A ?, is that Sony sound with NAV ?)

Aside from the exchange rate discount (& this one SEL), looks like pretty strong resale values,

I don't know, a quick search shows that 2013 US C-Max Hybrids are running about 13.5K or so. Most with 30K miles or more, but still, plenty of life left and no worries about importing.

As I noted, 'not for the faint of heart'; and I would add not for distant reaches.  The market here in Seattle is definitely a scosh higher than you suggest; and I would not hesitate to include lower BC in any search I was doing.  There are certainly no loaded low mile SEL's for sale here for 13,5 (generally 18K plus). In addition, as LN noted there are some advantages to consider as well - daytime running lights and perhaps a built in block heater.

All subject to personal preferences; & for us, SEL, 303A, with pano & Nav all the way (& would not mind having a block heater as well).

The search you provided did all of Canada - so you found C-Max's in Alberta (that's where Lacombe is).

What do you think of this 2015 C-Max SEL with panoramic roof for US $18752 with 5,200 miles? (New Hamburg is a little place about an hour west of Toronto).

DRL are available on every model except 2014. The 2013 can be updated via the BCM by a dealer, and the 2015 and later have a driver option for it.

  • 1 month later...

I do remember years ago that this was a topic here in Detroit.   Because of the exchange rate some were buying in Canada like we are talking about in this post.   I also remember there was talk about stopping this from happening.  I think some were having issues with warranty being serviced here on a car made for Canada.  Just be careful.

Yes I've heard the same thing from the Canadian side when our dollar was at par.  Doesn't stop people though when the price is right.  Cross border car shopping is a big business.
