New generation Cmax

I'm just back from London where I was able to rent the next generation Grand Cmax as its known over there. If you don't know there are two sizes of Cmax in Europe, with the version we have called Grand Cmax.

over there, the Grand has a third row where the batteries go as it comes with a diesel or three cylinder ecoboost. And to be honest, the trunk floor isn't much lower. Rented the three cylinder stick shift with stop start. You get used to it after a while. Dubious benefit.

However the new version also has a sliding second row doors.

I liked the improvements. Sliding door works well, fit and finish seems improve as does switches and general design.

When is North America going to get the next generation?

Most of what you mention is something we are unlikely to get, as it seems Ford doesn't think the Grand C-Max would sell well here (in its place we basically have the Edge). Personally, I wish our C-max was based on the Grand C-Max, the sliding doors make a lot of sense even without a third row of seats and the extra length would be useful for more cargo space and possibly a larger HVB (and could really help with the Energi).

I'm thinking we likely see the new C-Max in 2015, assuming they keep the C-Max model, but that the biggest difference will be the redesigned front end. The new European C-Max (not grand) doesn't show many differences compared to ours, other than the new front end.

So no more truck space? Darn! ;)  So reg. CMAX is even smaller.

I may be recalling wrong, but I seem to recall the third row is an option on the Grand C-Max. Regardless, you have the option of folding the third row down and still having the first two rows usable, if you need the extra trunk space.

Minor clarification: our C-Max Hybrid & Energi are not based on the Grand C-Max found across the pond - our C-Max is based on the standard model.  The Grand C-Max across the pond is a stretched version of the standard C-Max model and came out much later than the standard (2010).

The Grand C-Max is indeed a great variation for family hauling.

Nick

First Gen C-Max 2003 to 2010 - Europe

2nd Gen C-Max 2010 to present (incl. new 'stretched' Grand C-Max) - Europe

C-Max Hybrid & Energi based on Euro C-Max standard version - 2013 to present USA & Canada

3rd Gen C-Max - pending 20?? - Europe, USA, Canada, models ????.

Previous reports stated that Ford is working on an all new designed from the ground up hybrid.  I think that is a good idea.  I hope they keep the basic look and height.   I love the looks of the Chevy Bolt and I think it looks like the C-Max.  I know that one is all electric.   I think I remember hearing sometime in 2017 or 2018?
