Can the Liftgate support 90 lbs. of bikes and bike rack?

Recommended Posts

I am looking to transport a couple of bicycles and considering either hitch or liftgate transport.  Can anyone tell me what kind of weight load I can put on the liftgate?  One rack that I am looking at from SportRack weighs about 12 pounds and my bikes weigh in at about 35 lb. each.  Too much or would this not be a problem on the liftgate?   The cost is less going this route rather than installing a hitch or attachments to roof-mount the bikes. I'm thinking there is really not a problem with the SportRack but it will just not go up automatically when the bikes are on the Max, but...

Thanks, Paul.  That's a lot of bike on the back!  Glad for the info as that is the way I really want to transport my bikes; I'll also look at the Saris product.

This is the way it looks without bikes and arms down. Once you have installed it, it only takes a few minutes to remove and reinstall.  :)

I like it a lot.  In fact, the best approach I've seen including a hitch-based rack or the SportRack which doesn't look as sturdy.  Sturdy is very  important as we will be towing the Max behind a motorhome where we can't really keep a keen eye on the bikes.  Thanks a lot for posting a second picture.
