I may pick up an Energi in the future, does this TSB on the HF35 cover the CMax Energi? I couldn’t tell by reading it.

I am no lawyer, but from what I read in this, this is all to be covered by the standard Hybrid Warrantee which I think was 8 years or 100K miles which ever comes first.

This is the paragraph that I read in the TSB that leads me to think this:

Warranty Status: Eligible Under Provisions Of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage And Emissions Warranty Coverage Warranty/ESP coverage limits/policies/prior approvals are not altered by a TSB. Warranty/ESP coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part and verified using the OASIS part coverage tool.

But the key to all this is the August 15th, 2015 post manufacture date.....as I read the TSB, buying a vehicle after that date will get you a "good" transmission. Of course, if you buy one prior to this that has already had it's transmission fail and fixed, and I suppose you are all set as well.....so long as the repair wasn't to put some used unit it that itself was in the pre-Aug 15, 2015 vintage and had also NOT been "repaired". I guess vehicle history is sort of important in all this.

I am a new to CMAX user....only in my first day....so I don't know that I am an "expert" in any of this....so take heed of that....  ?

PS: I love my CMAX Hybrid so far.....I as loving the learning curve to driving efficiency!

I just looked at a 2013 C-Max Energi today and it was making the noise while not moving but in park and neutral. It actually goes away when put into "gear" Is there a different issue that makes the same noises? It was at an auction place so I could not move it more than a few feet. Has 106k miles. Noise definitely coming from trans.

I will start off by saying that I would be extremely careful with this because even if this is NOT the same problem, I would wonder if someone who owned this car might not have "cut some corners" after having the actual transmission issue and had a local yokal pull the transmission and do a local "fix". (and perhaps messing up something else in the process.

Transmission noises are not typically a good thing....

But regarding your original question, this is EXACTLY what the TSB states, and given what is says regarding a stationary vehicle, I would say it is NOT the same issue......but still, it might be an issue!

Here is the TSB wording: (and link: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2018/MC-10148717-9999.pdf)

Quote

"Issue: Some 2013-2016 Fusion, MKZ and C-Max vehicles equipped with an HF35 transmission and built on or before 15-Aug-2015 may exhibit a thumping/rubbing or grinding noise coming from the transmission. The noise may be present in all gear ranges including neutral when the vehicle is moving but will not be present when the vehicle is stationary or in park."

Just make sure you get an absolutely great deal and be prepared to get the transmission repaired. If you like to gamble, this might be something to roll the dice on. I am not sure I would. (also, how much do you trust the writer of the TSB to fully describe the issue)

I just came from my mechanic because my 2013 Ford C-Max tranny whines.  Sure enough, with only 137k miles,  this EXTREMELY well-maintained C-Max's transmission has failed and needs replacement.  I  am So pissed!    Is there any Ford customer service discount or perhaps a 'secret warranty' assistance?

The short answer is NO "secret warranty" assistance.

Your best bet is to source a salvaged transmission which came out of a post Aug. 15 2015 vehicle.  Search this site as several have done such.  If your mechanic is reasonable, you should get out with no more than 11 hours of labor. Add maybe $1500 or less for transmission, shipping, and miscellaneous parts.  See attached TSB.

I have a 2015 C-Max Hybrid with 51K miles on it now without any issues so far.  I've read that cars manufactured before 08/2015 have potentially bad transmission bearings.

Mine was manufactured 04/2015, so falls within that period.

Have there been many transmission failures with cars similar to mine?

Thanks,

I wish I would have found this thread before I bought a Ford c-max sel. It's been a little over a two and a half years and my transmission went out so I had it replaced with the warranty, at the dealership; about a year into owning it . When I got it back the inside was a mess and there were car parts that didn't not belong to my car. Then I had to take it back because all the lights came on and it started overheating really bad. They got the lights turned off but they didn't replace some caps under the hood and they told me that the car will run without them.(This is the Ford dealership!!!)  A week ago the transmission is dead again so I took it back to the dealership for them to tell me there is metal in the transmission. I looked it up and asked a few mechanics and it turns out that the dealership did not empty out the oil completely or at all when they replaced the original transmission the first time. Now the dealership want me to pay $8,000 to replace the transmission. I can't afford that and he told me that now that I'm paying out of pocket they will get me brand new parts ( they installed a used transmission into me car!!! Because I used the warranty), get the car back faster, and give me 4 year warranty. The transmission that was covered with the warranty only had a 1 year warranty and no I was not told. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR OR ANY CAR FROM FORD!!!NEVER AGAIN!! NOW I HAVE A GIANT PAPER WEIGHT!! I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!

Triv, I'm sorry this happened to you. That's an awful experience to go through.

Have you tried contacting the Better Business Bureau, or maybe letting the dealership know you've contact a lawyer about this?

This should really be on them for not performing the warranty repairs satisfactorily. They stuffed up by not doing a proper job and cutting corners. It's their problem to fix at their expense, not yours.

Just returned from Star Ford in Glendale CA.  Have been informed that I will probably need a new transmission.. A bit of a shock as it was replaced once at approx 30.000 miles.  No discussion of any warranty but glad to hear I should be covered as I am at 72.000 miles.

My C Max is an SEL 2015  I will update when I hear more..

My 13 (Energi) is still holding up at 87.5k miles knock on wood. No new abnormal noises. I still get a constant, but low brake scraping noise that I've posted about on this forum prior that even my dealer couldn't narrow down even with a ride-along. At best they told me it was just the brakes and normal and I'm just hearing it because it's a hybrid/plug-in and drives so quiet. That noise hasn't gotten any worse, but also not any better. Not due for new brakes yet so will just wait patiently until that time comes and see if anything changes.

Keep in mind that Energi variants had 0 of 4 transmission failures in the same test that failed 3 of 4 in Hybrid variants.

That detail furthers my suspicion that Ford shot themselves in the ass by omitting the transmission fluid circulation pump on the otherwise-identical Hybrid transmission. I wonder if hyper-milers with the longest periods of battery-only use have seen the most failures?
