2013 CMAX Sync Issue, Bad APIM Module

Recommended Posts

Hi all

My CMAX HEV with ~43K miles has sync issues.!

Dealership detected it has bad APIM  module  rendering the Sync inoperable -> Un-pairs my phone , Bluetooth, Voice commands & USB  don’t work . Message on the screen is "Blue tooth media disconnected"

This issue happens randomly every couple of weeks & then after a few days without doing anything I can pair up my phone, play music & everything goes back to normal until the next event. Three such events in the past two months.

Going thru the master reset process does not help. Software versions are up to date.

I dug up a Customer Satisfaction program 12M02 (see attached pdf ) which calls out certain vehicles  built  in 2011-2013 with bad APIM modules covered with an extended warranty up to 5 years & no mileage constraints. Interestingly 2013 CMAX is not in the list.

The dealership says they have to replace the APIM module costing ~$600 parts & labor since I am out of the base warranty. We are also tried reaching out to Ford Customer Service & they are throwing  40% "good will" coverage of the total cost.

Since the past two days the sync decided to show me some mercy & is working fine.

I am torn if I should take the 40% off deal & get the module replaced or just live with this quirky sync. I am concerned  the same issue might repeat even after replacing.

I read somewhere on pulling the fuses although it did not help for me.

Any advise

It shows up for me, as well, on the owner.ford.com site, for my 2013 C-Max SEL. I suppose my question is if you have My Ford Touch or just the base Sync system -- if you have MFT then your car should be covered by CSP 12M02. I'd suggest checking at owner.ford.com to see what recalls there are for your vehicle. You don't need to create an account, you can just type in your VIN to see the current recalls for your car. As scottwood2 points out, you can also perform a Vehicle Health Check on your car to see the open recalls.

Good point.  Mine is an SE but I do have the MFT upgrade.

Hi greencmax,

I can look in to it for you. Can you tell me what is your SYNC version? It is listed here:

First my radio quit working. Then the screen went blank. The next day, the car would not start at all. I just got a new 12 volu battery a couple of months ago.

We jumped it and got it to the dealer. They said it was a bad APIM module. $1,200 to replace.

Has anyone else had their radio quit working and the car not start too?

I am a new owner to a 2013 Cmax energi and it has a bad  accessory protocol interface module. The extended warranty does not apply.  The dealer ones 1200 dollars to fix it,  My far more affordable mechanic can't program it or even get the part (can that be right?)

Is there a work around or do I just  live without it?  Suggestions?  Does anyone have the part number?  I can replace it myself and possibly have dealer re program?   The dealer is quoting 700+ for the part, and 500 for installation and shop fees, plus tax.

Thank you

SA

sasadler: I've got the same situation. I've had 3 replacement batteries, and the 3rd one (4th, counting the original) is failing. APIM failure, as well, with the dealer quoting me $1k+. I haven't checked to see if my SEL is covered by any extended warranty from Ford.

Dealer says the APIM is sold to them by a "vendor", that visits the dealership periodically, isn't a Ford employee, and in fact, the replacement APIM doesn't come with a warranty.

This is when you need to buy a used/salvage Sync3 APIM, Screen and USB hub adapter and make the upgrade. I bought all I need via eBay for $300. I’m going Non-Navigational as I will use Apple CarPlay to navigate with WAZE/Google Maps from my phone. You will have to program the system to all talk to each other using FORScan ($50 for lifetime license on PC)  and then find a C-Max with all your accessories 2017 or later and then enter that vehicles VIN into FORScan and it will program all the modules to match. My parts are on the way to me and I’ll do the upgrade in the next couple of weeks. I will document my upgrade which has been forced by my system intermittently shutting down, please read my other threads on my specific problem. I’m fairly certain my problem is my ACM connections, not APIM so I will sell my APIM and Screen after the upgrade: it works fine, my problem is actually the ACM and I believe it is the connections not the radio itself, yet I may have to replace the ACM as well.

I wanted to share this data as I see your in a pinch, search ‘Sync2 upgrade’, plenty of hits.
