Replacing hatch release / upgrade?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2013 C-Max Energi with the 300A package (backup sensors, no backup camera).  The hatch release handle broke off completely recently and Ford quoted me over $400 to replace it with a new one (painted to match).  I found a matching replacement at a salvage yard that was from a model that had the backup camera, $70 shipped.  I've seen alot of discussions on adding aftermarket cameras but haven't seen anything about this type of upgrade.

Does anyone have any solid points on if there are the right parts (cables, modules, ect) already inplace that would allow this upgrade/replacment to actually gain a backup camera?  I'll happy enough to have replace the handle for less but if I can put the OEM camera to use, why not try.

on a slight tangent, any tips on removing the trim from the hatch back to possibly install the handle myself and save the labor cost of replacing the handle would also be appreciated.

Thanks for any good input.

I have added two backup cameras and mounted the lens on the sides of the handle.  Popping the panels off without breaking the clips is the hardest part. The sound of panel coming off is not pleasant.  A set of panel removal tool will help you but I didn't have any when I removed my panels. One of my cameras is for backward view recording and the other one is for a wide angle backup camera.  Both were inexpensive.

I had a conversation with a Ford dealership and neither the service department or the parts department either knew the answer or wanted to admit they knew the answer.  The closest thing they wanted to get me was a comparison of the wire harness part number if I could get them the VIN of the car the replacement hatch release came from.  So I guess it maybe a trial and error this weekend or just wait till my scheduled appointment and see what they do.
