I purchased my second c max.  I have been disappoinmted in the mielage as it is lexx than my 2015.  Also the battery charge is quite different as well.  I have checked with my dealer who reports I am the only person commenting on this.  Has anyone else reported these items.

Welcome to the forum.

I am curious what is the difference in mileage with the kind of driving - city vs highway?  Also how the charging is different?

There may be a slightly lower break in period mileage as well as your first C-Max may be reporting a slightly higher mileage if the tires are worn. (Worn tires are a bit smaller)

marlidog, welcome.

The difference can likely be explained but you have given us virtually no information about your two C-Maxes. In addition to what obob asked for, can you provide the miles on both cars, model years, mpg you are getting on both cars, miles on the tires, brand and model of tires, pressure in the tires.

My suggestion is to get someone to follow you on a 20 mile round trip drive in your other C-Max.  Reset the trip meters in both at the start and report the fuel economy shown on the trip meters at the end of the 20 mile loop.

Thanks for all your answers to my questions.  I asked both the service man and the new car man and neither was aware of any changes from year to year concerning these two  models.

I combined all of your questions in one post below:

my driving pattern is virtually the same.  The battery charge now occurs when I would say "coasting" meaning not accelerating at any speed.  It also occurs at the time of braking as it used to.   It has not ever reached full charge ever as yet while the other car a full charge occurred regularly.
Since this is a brand new car and the other one was too when leased.  I really didn't notice a break in period in the first car.  I was getting 42 mpg
first cmax sel was a new 2015 leased vehicle.  this is a brand new 2017 titanium.  After a 2 year lease the mileage reached 10000  miles at turn in.  the new car has not reached 2000 after about 5 months of driving.
tire pressures where just checked when the car was taken for the first check up

The mileage has begun to creep up, but until very recently it was 30mph.  now I believe I get about 38.  I have noticed that while driving, the indicators stay in the white zone longer than in the blue on the dash indicators.  I really have never understood what these indicators mean so maybe that will tell me something if understood.

you can see I am not very informed on the car but this being the second same model I am aware of the differences.

White zone means the engine is running.

Blue zone means the engine is not running, you're using the motor.

If you're seeing more white and less blue, you would expect poorer mileage. Something's different.

HAve fun,

I also have two C-Max, a 2013 and a 2016.  I'm getting much better mileage in the 2016.  I don't believe Ford changed the car a bit between 2016 and 17.

I'm not sure when it was implemented but the newer models now have an ECO mode.  ECO mode has increased my mileage by about 4 MPG.  I use a use an ODB II plug in to track mileage on both my cars.

For this year ...

2016 C-Max - 13,900 Miles, 45.6 MPG

2013 C-Max - 9,500 Miles, 41.0 MPG

Now to be fair I'm driving the 2016 SE and my wife is driving the 2013 SEL.  Her driving characteristics are very different and account for a portion of the differences.

The 2017 vs. 2016 C-Max added the new Titanium model, along with Blind Spot Monitoring/Rear Cross-traffic Alert. Other than that one new option and the SEL being changed to Titanium (and dropping one of the option packages), the 2016 and 2017 do appear to be the same.

Marlidog "The battery charge now occurs when I would say "coasting" meaning not accelerating at any speed.  It also occurs at the time of braking as it used to.   It has not ever reached full charge ever as yet while the other car a full charge occurred regularly."  This is confusing to me. The only way the HVB is charged is by the ICE running, Regen braking and Regen coasting in Drive, It is extremely difficult to fully charge up HVB.  The only way to charge the HVB full for all 2013-17 CMAX's is to have a long down hill decent. A 2-3 year old HVB has less capacity then new one so it would fill up quicker. It should be rare that you fill up the HVB, I don't think I have ever filled up the HVB coming down West Bound I-40 into Albuquerque so I'm curious how you are doing it. :headscratch:  BTW I had my Trans replaced at RICH FORD. :)

When I drove the 2017 CMAX I started out with ECO Mode and immediately reminded me of driving a Prius so I turned it off. Using my EV to 15 mph, then accelerate at 2 Bars to 5 mph over cruise speed, then go into EV I believe is the best method to get the best MPG's from my experience. :) I drove the 2017 in the rain, 55*F OT and 46.3 mpg so you factor in 2 mpg for rain and 3 mpg for 15*F below 70*F for standard comparison temperature I get 51.3 mpg which is very good. :)

They could be the same, it would take a side by side comparison for me to see. :headscratch:  Just looked at Fuelly and 2016 Hybrids(20) averaging about 38.5 and 2017 Hybrids(6) 44 mpg. Looking at the mpg#s( I believe Fuelly.com screwed up for the 2016) I think 2016 should be 42 mpg and 2017 44 mpg. Not a very large sample #.

frank thanks for the explanation of white and blue.  I have a hybrid.  what do you mean  motor and engine?

"Engine" is the internal combustion engine (ICE) that uses gas.

There are two motors, it's true, but only one that's connected directly to the drive wheels and in use when you're "EV'ing."

The car uses one neat properties of electricity - it's reversible.

- The drive motor also act as a generator to provide regenerative braking.

- The second motor spins really fast in either direction. It can charge, drive, or do nothing, making it perfect for the car's powertrain control system.

.

As the color changes, you're switching between white (ICE) and blue (motor) sides of the drive train. How it switches depends on high voltage battery (HVB) charge level, and how hard your right foot pushes the throttle. It's easy to switch; take your foot off for a moment, then back gently, and you'll start to EV.

From there, I try to use the ICE uphill and EV downhill, to get more glide miles out of the electric side.

Have fun,

Frank

I am disgusted with the ford personnel as with repeated questions they could tell me nothing like you all did.  I looked at the dash and found an eco button which I found charges the battery more and if I read you correctly I will get better mileage.   That was not on my 2015.  I do disagree that there are no other changes.  Who would have thought you needed to read the manual at first fill up to open the darn gas cap!!  That is only one change but there are others including how the battery charges.  If they are going to sell a car they should be schooled so they can let buyers know.  I thought there were minor changes but they were never discussed with me.  yes I did ask questions.  Oh well I now have fuelly and a eco button, know how to open the gas tank and will drive on happily.  I may use the other Ford dealer next time or at least get another sales man
