why did I love the ride on ford fusion hybrid

this morning I got the fusion hybrid as a loaner while my cmax is being worked on at the dealer. The ride was so much better than the cmax - much quieter while going uphill. The cmax's engine will roar at the slightest sense of an incline - I have to back of the gas pedal so the engine noise would go away while irritating those behind me. this fusion was just a champ - so much quieter while going through all terrain. I can punch the gas at times of need and car responds much better compared to my cmax. Both seem to have the same 2.0 liter engine - so why the difference. Is insulation better in fusion than cmax? when I stopped the car after driving ~50 miles, the mpg was 50.5 whereas I have been getting 2 mpg lower in my cmax lately. The map and the instrument cluster layout was also much better than than what I have cmax but this could be because of model year differences. I want the shell of my cmax over the internals of this fusion hybrid.

With respect to "punchiness." I just checked Consumer Reports  2015 C-Max vs 2017 FusionHybrid for performance and the C-Max is .1-.2 seconds quicker in all the categories(0-30,0-60, 45-65,1/4mile).  Speed at the end of the 1/4 mile was 1 mph less for the C-Max.  (So it might beat the C-Max if there were a 1/2  mile test which makes sense for the Fusion design has less wind resistance. )

 

It is possible Consumer Reports used the numbers from an older year and assuming you had a newer Fusion, maybe Ford did some better tuning for quickness and the noise when the gas engine is charging the battery.

 

By the way, the C-Max has the Consumer Reports check mark for recommended which is a pretty big deal.

 

 

Also, if you run your tires at a higher pressure, that will increase cabin noise and harden the ride for the Fusion probably has the standard pressure.

 

Also, according to Tire Rack some 2017 Fusions have 18" wheels which might effect the ride and "punchiness."

I would not describe my C-Max as "roaring at the slightest incline."  Perhaps you might want to test drive another C-Max for comparison for maybe there is something wrong.  My C-Max makes a louder noise when the gas engine is recharging the High Voltage Battery(HVB) but backing off the pedal will not stop that noise unless the gas motor stops and I am moving on electric only.  And that noise I would not describe as a roar but as a lower frequency pulling drone sound.  When that noise is present which is when there is regeneration, on the main left display screen there is an up arrow on the top right. (It might be the empower screen but I am not sure that name is correct.)

Sounds like there could an issue with your C-Max if it is roaring loudly enough to cause you to back off and irritate people behind you. Possibly the active noise cancellation is faulty.

 

Not sure why the acceleration would be significantly different, maybe it's due to a difference in model year? The 2016 model year did add an ECO button which significantly dampens the acceleration, but the 2015 model doesn't seem to have a comparable feature.

 

The C-Max is less aerodynamic than the Fusion. C-Max has a lower EPA MPG rating, so the slight difference in fuel economy seems normal.

I dropped off our Cmax last week for the door latch recall and also received a 2017 Fusion for a loaner. It wasn't a hybrid, but the Titanium model. Very nice, quiet, comfortable ride. I was also impressed with the screen, self dimming high beams, nav, yada, yada. However.... I would not consider one, because I prefer the utility of a hatchback. I also like sitting up higher, and the ease of entry and exit in the Cmax. The best mileage I could get (on the screen) was 28 mpg. Not interested in trading that for our usual 46 in the Cmax. Definitely a very nice ride, just not for me.
