Maxwell probably getting retired

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone... Sad news. Went to drive the car today and the car was making a horrible noise. Went to turn and the car struggled, moaned and groaned. Took to the dealership, they said we don't have any openings until next week. I'm having surgery on Thursday. Took the car to Goodyear. They figured out that it was a failed steering gear assembly. It had failed internally and the entire assembly will need to be replaced. Nearly $2,000. I about dropped dead on the floor upon hearing that. Said I'd have to make a few calls and came home.

On the way home, it's gotten so bad that I almost crashed into another car coming around the corner when the car would not turn. Filing a complaint with NHTSA. Dealership/Ford will not help at all. Says that they couldn't forsee the issue when they sold me the vehicle, and that it isn't covered by the Hybrid component warranty.

Soooo this sounds like the end for Maxwell. This will have put it over $4,000 in repairs since I bought it a year and a half ago.

Not sure if this is the part but it might be.  Maybe this will help you in your decision though I do realize that labor is expensive.

This listing says the part is compatible with 2013-2016

This listing which is less expensive says it is only compatible with 2014 but to me it might be worth an email to verify this for the above one is compatible with 3 years.

I am curious how many miles you have on your car ?

Sorry to hear of your bad luck with C-max reliability.  I see Ford recalled some electric steering units (but not C-max).

FYI:

rebuilt electric steering assembly for Cmax is $565 shipped:

Should be less recycled (not rebuilt) from a salvage yard.

Well we will see what the NHTSA says. But I'm not sure I'll get anywhere. Looking at replacement vehicles and going to have a discussion with the family to see if they'll loan money to cover difference between trade-in and loan value.

I'm really disappointed because I never thought this would happen. If I did, I'd have bought an extended warranty.

Here's Another recent broken steering rack (with one warning code issued prior to breaking):

To OP: Good luck with your upcoming surgery. Keep us posted on what the NTHSA has to say about this failure.

Well, the car is back home now. It's been repaired.

I don't think that I realized the car is supposed to turn completely silently. It has made noise since I bought it. But I brought it home last night and you turn the wheel... nothing. It steers perfectly with no noise at all.

Service manager said to talk to the sales manager see if they'll cut a deal for me. Not sure they will. But I think they should give me some of my money back.

As much as I love my C-Max, I'm expecting Ford to bring to the market the next generation of hybrids, and in particular the Escape, later this year.  So, if you're still considering trading in the C-Max, you might wait until the new Fords arrive.

This. The new RAV4 Hybrid is also an appealing option, with impressive MPG, AWD and Toyota reliability. The Escape obviously won't be a hatchback/wagon like the C-MAX, but rather a crossover.

2019 RAV4 ECO numbers are estimates which are close to CMAX EPA #'s  They don't say anything about AWD#s. Local Dealer says they are going to be available sometime next month.  Link:    https://www.toyota.com/upcoming-vehicles/rav4hybrid/?srchid=sem:Model_RAV4_Hybrid:GOOGLE:RAV4_Hybrid_General_New_E::&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=Cj0KCQiA5NPjBRDDARIsAM9X1GLUeccn_IJzpHGOBQtbg9nLu5SxbznaIH0omDyqOKpKQfZQbL_ZOYQaAjGmEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

  • 3 weeks later...

Well, it's official! We're trading in Maxwell on Monday. For another C-Max lol. 2017 Energi Titanium with 37k miles.

If anyone knows how I can track electric/gasoline usage for fuel economy I'd greatly appreciate it!

I would suggest looking at the CMAX Energi forum, they will have the answers. Good Luck and let us know how you do. :)

Seems ever so slightly faster. But that might just be because I just use the HVB and you don't need the engine so it might "feel" faster? I've only used fuel twice so far. MPG says it's over 400.

Makes a huge difference in fuel costs for me. Have used around 60 CENTS of electricity compared to what would be $3.50 in gas.
