Side Mirrors Questions

Recommended Posts

The C Max is my first Ford product after years of Japanese cars, so maybe this is a general question about brand standards.

With the SEL, are the side mirrors heated only when the rear defrost is on, or do they operate like the rain sensitive mirrors?  Nothing in specs or owners manual that I've seen.

The side mirrors also seem to be more spotty than I am used to  - nothing that a wipe or two won't fix but wonder if this is due to heating or quality of mirror finish.

Mirrors are heated ONLY when the rear window heat is on.  From the manual, see my underline in the last sentence.  Also, see the note about cleaning the mirrors (yes, they can get a little spotty, I think so anyway).

HEATED WINDOWS AND MIRRORS (IF EQUIPPED)

Heated Rear Window

Note: The vehicle must be running to use this feature.

Press the control to clear the rear window of thin ice and fog. Press the control again within 15 minutes to switch it off. It turns off automatically after approximately 15 minutes, or when you switch the ignition off.

Do not use razor blades or other sharp objects to clean the inside of the rear window or to remove decals from the inside of the rear window. This may cause damage to the heated grid lines and will not be covered by your warranty.

Heated Exterior Mirror (If Equipped)

Note: Do not remove ice from the mirrors with a scraper or attempt to readjust the mirror glass if it is frozen in place. These actions could cause damage to the glass and mirrors.

Note: Do not clean the housing or glass of any mirror with harsh abrasives, fuel or other petroleum-based cleaning products.

Both mirrors are heated to remove ice, mist and fog when the rear window defroster is activated.

If you don't have heated side mirrors and your car is out in an ice storm, an ice dam forms on the ledge of the containers holding the mirrors and prevents mirror adjustment -- a real problem if you have more than one driver and need to readjust the mirrors.

My solution is to use a thin plastic card as an ice scraper and remove the ice dam.

Can I buy a heated mirror from SEL and put it to my SE ??

Do you have wiring diagram of it ??

Many times rather than having two or three or more different wiring harness', a manufacturer will use just one.  This is really a cost cutting feature since it's basically one size fits all.

I belong and have belonged to other forums, both GM and Ford, and have read posts about someone adding heated mirrors, mirrors with turn signals, mirror with puddle lights, etc and not having to do anything other than a plug and play modification.  There have also been mods made inside the car and the proper wire harness was already in place.

If you don't find a wire schematic with the information you are looking for, you might have to remove the door panel.  You could then see what wires are there for the mirror and if there are any that are unused.

Yes, you will have to look at the connector that is inside the door to see how many wires are there and if any of them are not being used.  If you remove the mirror that is on the car now, you should be able to see the connector that the mirror wires plug into.  You may be able to see how many wires are on that connector without taking off the door panel.

I can try and find a wire schematic tomorrow since I have the Ford Service Manual on DVD.

The heated mirrors are available on the SE.  I have them as they came as part of the winter package.  You also get lights on the bottom of the mirrors to light up the ground as you get in.  The heated mirrors and heated seats are nice to have here in Michigan.

I too thought the symbol on the mirror would light up when on but they do not light up as others have said.

I looked at the wire schematic and found that you do have to take off the door panel to access the mirror connector.  There should be 5 wires like you stated.  2 additional wires may also be at the connector, which would be for the puddle light and for the heated mirror.

The heated mirror wire shows to be Green/Violet, and the puddle light mirror shows to be Violet/Green.  The heated mirror wires runs to pin #7 on the driver door module.  If you have more than 5 wires at the connector, you may be able to add a mirror with heat and puddle lights.

Best of luck and hope you can make it happen!

Not very good at being able to copy and post things from the service manual, but see if this comes through for you.  This is for a 2013 C-Max but should be similar for all of them.  Doesn't surprise me that the wire colors don't correspond to what the manual says.  Pretty common, but the pin numbers should be the same.

Not sure if your car is a right hand drive or left hand drive?  Here is the right hand mirror (passenger side).  Both these schmatics are for a US left hand drive.  I noticed some additional wires for this side mirror going to the HVAC system.  You might want to check the passenger side for these wires also.  I was wondering how the drivers side got turned on by the use of the defogger since the first picture I posted didn't show anything to do so.
