ScubaDadMiami
The CMAX wasn't tested, but the Prius V got poor marks. http://www.iihs.org/ratings/rating.aspx?id=1752&seriesId=740 The Escape was better, but still not so great. http://www.iihs.org/ratings/ratingsbyseries.aspx?id=322 Recent model years of the Focus got top marks. http://www.iihs.org/ratings/ratingsbyseries.aspx?id=328 I wonder if the CMAX will be more like the Focus or the Escape. It has the Focus frame, but I don't know if that translates for impact testing.
fotomoto
My understanding is the Small overlap front test is new and many cars are getting a poor rating on it yet pass all others. On the above Prius V link, click on the fourth picture and see where the left front wheel ends up. YIKES!
MADCMAX
Has anyone figured out that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety already tested the FUSION that came out AFTER the Cmax? It makes me worry that they tested a car that came out AFTER the Cmax. It makes me worry because the ratings on the US Government website (NHTSA) show less than a stellar rating. It makes me worry that they tested a car that came out AFTER the Cmax. It makes me worry because the ratings on the US Government website (NHTSA) show less than a stellar rating. There are a lot of cars that have not been tested. "Small overlap front test resultsNo small overlap front tests have been conducted for this vehicle" It may be that they test the most popular ones first. I also noticed that the tests have one result for ford fusion, so I would be surprised if it was the hybrid. Though here is a positive for the Fusion energi http://fordcmaxhybridforum.com/topic/2029-ford-fusion-energi-earns-top-vehicle-safety-rating-from-nhtsa/?do=findComment&comment=19484 Edited May 20, 2013 by obob
darrelld
The Ford Focus recently completed the IIHS Small Overlap Front Test with an acceptable rating. Since the C-Max shares much of the Focus platform this could indicate how well our cars will perform in this test. http://www.iihs.org/ratings/rating.aspx?id=1845 fotomoto

In fact, it got GOOD ratings (the highest) on injuries related to the occupant.
Seth7721
Hi everyone! I contacted the IIHS, and they said the C-max doesn't sell enough for them to test it. They did say though, "The Focus and C-max have many of the same structural components. So, you can expect the C-maxes rating to be close to that of the Focus." Then, I e-mailed them back again and asked if it would be as close to the Escape as the Focus. They responded and said " No, it is going to be closer to the Focus. Since the Escape is higher off the ground, it hits the barrier differently. So, as I said in the last message, you can expect the C-max to get a rating close to the Focus." fotomoto and ScubaDadMiami

The Prii got poor ratings in this crash, not certain why anyone would down grade their families safety to gain a few mpg. Seth7721

ArizonaEnergi
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash test ratings for the Hybrid: Overall: 4, Front: 4, Side: 5, Rollover 4http://www.safercar.gov/Vehicle+Shoppers/5-Star+Safety+Ratings/2011-Newer+Vehicles/Vehicle-Detail?vehicleId=7482 For the Energi: Overall: 4, Front: 4, Side: 5, Rollover 4http://www.safercar.gov/Vehicle+Shoppers/5-Star+Safety+Ratings/2011-Newer+Vehicles/Vehicle-Detail?vehicleId=7481 Note that the Tesla S has been awarded the highest ratings ever! http://www.teslamotors.com/about/press/releases/tesla-model-s-achieves-best-safety-rating-any-car-ever-testedIndependent testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has awarded the Tesla Model S a 5-star safety rating, not just overall, but in every subcategory without exception. Approximately one percent of all cars tested by the federal government achieve 5 stars across the board. NHTSA does not publish a star rating above 5, however safety levels better than 5 stars are captured in the overall Vehicle Safety Score (VSS) provided to manufacturers, where the Model S achieved a new combined record of 5.4 stars.Of all vehicles tested, including every major make and model approved for sale in the United States, the Model S set a new record for the lowest likelihood of injury to occupants. While the Model S is a sedan, it also exceeded the safety score of all SUVs and minivans. This score takes into account the probability of injury from front, side, rear and rollover accidents.
