  1. My guess is that sensors detect refrigerant gas pressure in the evaporator section of the a/c, the pump turns on to re-liquify the gas and store it in the receiver. Once the gas pressure is low enough, the pump turns off. If cooling is required this pump should cycle or run continuously.
