  1. I drive around my community mostly.  Less than 5,000 miles a year.  Still have the original tires except one replacement -- which is the same as originals.

My C Max is a 2013. It is serviced by time rather then miles but do it very regularly.

My 2013 C Max  is missing 7 out of the 20 lug nuts it is supposed to have!

I discovered this situation today as I approached my car in a commercial parking lot and just happened to look at one of my wheels and noticed that a lug nut was missing.  Checking further, each of three wheels was missing one nut each and the fourth wheel was missing four of the five nuts.

I have been experiencing dashboard warning lights indicating my traction control and brake assistance were not working.  I took my car into the dealer for service and was told it was safe to drive and that I needed to bring it back when they had the time to do a thorough electronics exam.  Have appointment for tomorrow.  I called dealer back today to inform him of my discovery, which he agreed may be the problem.

Anyone else ever experience anything like this?

To finish the story, my dealer said that the lug nuts on C Max's, and other cars with wheels that don't have hub caps, use decorative lug nuts, lose their shape with wrenching to rotate the tires, etc.  Mine were worn and replaced at my expense.  This is not a safety issue so far so no recalls.  Problem is that after the nuts have become misshapen a regular lug wrench of the proper size no longer works.

Still don't know why I lost some on my car to begin with.  Maybe the deformed lug nut didn't tighten up enough when the tires were changed for rotation -- in which case, if proven, it would be a safety issue it seems to me.

  3. I was getting on the Washington Beltway (I 495) today and had to floor my accelerator pedal to merge with traffic (something I almost never do as I am a very careful driver).  I noticed a cloud of white smoke coming from my exhaust while accelerating. Should I be concerned?

  4. Does this mean Tom's wheels have fallen off and can't get back on to reply? :headscratch:

    Paul :)

    The rest of the story:

The dealer fixed the electrical problems of ABS and TRAC lights being on by repairing the wheel speed sensor harness which had a broken wire.

As for the missing lug nuts, they were replaced at no cost but no guilt admitted.

  6. Did the dealer reset the 12 V Battery Monitoring System to indicate a new battery? Otherwise, the charging algorithm will continue to use the calculated energy losses of the old battery in determining the appropriate charging regime. It will mean that the new battery will likely be charged to a lower SOC than it should be.

The dealer seemed to think the 12V Battery Monitoring System is a computer issue and not related to battery replacement. He kind of blew me off on the matter.  I'm not sure he even knows what the 12V Battery Monitoring System is?

  7. My 2013 C Max has a manual lift gate and I'm having a similar problem.  My key fob controls are off and on.  Sometimes everything works, other times nothing.  Today, I had to unlock the driver's door with the key and noticed that the interior lights didn't come on when the door was open.

Could it be a BCM problem?

    Thanks for your thoughts.

I took my car into the dealer to see what's going on.  Needed new key fob batteries and a new engine battery.

  8. I have a 2013 C Max that I bought new in December of 2012.  It has run 30,000 miles.  The tires are the originals and have good tread life left. Should I be concerned about dry rot or some other issue and replace the tires now?

    Thanks for your input.
