K&N Performance Air Filter
hmatthews102 replied to 11StiLimited's topic in Accessories & Modifications
I have K&N filters in my Miatas and my motorhome. At the very least I think they do no harm and I do save money over the years. I usually keep my vehicles for many years, generally in double digits. I have to wonder though, if FE gains in excess of 20% are available by simply changing the air filter, why wouldn't the car companies put them in at the factory? Think of the boost to their CAFE numbers. -
Virginia is now taxing Hybrid car owners an additional tax
hmatthews102 replied to C-Maxgo's topic in General Discussion
Why should the roads be paid for only by those that drive on them? Everybody benefits from the roads, whether they drive on them or not. All of the goods people purchase are transported at some point over a public road. I do not have kids in school, yet I still am required to pay school taxes, which is fine, as it helps maintain a high quality community and keeps the value of my home up. The same principle should apply to the infrastructures we all use and benefit from. I think gas taxes should be removed and replaced with a general sales tax dedicated to maintaining the transportation infrastructure. This would spread the burden across all who benefit. -
Ford Tech Response to Clock and Calendar Problems

Yeah, I like my cars. We live in a house with an attached garage. I keep telling my wife we need a garage with an attached house. -
New High MPG.....a shameless brag about my C-MAX
hmatthews102 replied to Adair's topic in Fuel Mileage
Adair, I experienced the same thing today. My ride home from work was 28.1 miles, with 17.9 miles being EV. The readout showed 50.1 MPG when I parked in my driveway. I do love this car! -
Ford Tech Response to Clock and Calendar Problems
hmatthews102 replied to Generalbeluga's topic in Lounge: Off-Topic
It wouldn't take much code to have the MFT get the time from the phone when it syncs. My iPhone gets the time from the cell system and is normally correct. I guess writing one piece of code to work with all smartphones would be a problem, but if an app was developed to accomplish this, it could run unattended. Also, is it possible that MFT uses the GPS in our phones to locate our cars? I will have to turn my phone off on a trip to test this. -
Fresh out of College new guy wanting to buy C-MAX!
hmatthews102 replied to dkashlee's topic in Welcome
I would normally never pay extra for paint, but I did get the white platinum on this car. I purchased a vehicle that had already been ordered by the dealer and was close to being built. I could have taken either a gray or a silver one that came into the dealer a couple of days before mine, and not paid the extra money for the paint, but I decided I really liked the look of the color, so I waited a little longer to get it. I really like the color and think it was worth the extra cash over the plain white. I once had an Impala wagon that was plain white. My wife always called it the Kelvinator. You will have no trouble getting the mileage you are looking for. Enjoy the car. We all do. -
What I missed about my C-MAX this week......
hmatthews102 replied to Adair's topic in Lounge: Off-Topic
I live not too far from Adair and I am experiencing the same mileage variations. My fuelly also is low, compared to what I am getting these days. I also had over 2000 miles of high speed freeway driving when I first got the car. I did not see good fuel mileage then and it will take some time to get the fuelly number up. My daily commute is 30 miles each way. Depending on the temperature I am now getting 38-44 on the way to work, when the temps are at their lowest, and 46 -50 on the way home in the afternoon, when temps are highest. -
Welcome! You have made a good choice in vehicle. You will find this site a great source of information. If there is anything you need to know, just ask. You are sure to get an answer from the knowledgable people here. Happy C-Maxing!

Yes, Adair, the higher temps are making a lot of difference in the fuel mileage. I made two trips to AA from Plymouth over the weekend and was pushing 50 mpg on each. I have been getting 44 to 49 on my drive home from work. I have been getting 42 to 44 on my way in to work in the morning. I think because of the lower temp in the morning, as well as a little rise in elevatiion going from Plymouth to Pontiac. I, too, LOVE my C-Max!

Recreational Towing (behind a motor home)
hmatthews102 replied to jmckinley's topic in Cargo, Hauling, Roof Racks & Towing
I have both a good tow bar and a dolly to accommodate the various cars I tow behind my MH. I had planned on setting the CMAX up to be flat towed, but it sounds like it will be better to put it on the dolly. I usually travel with a Miata backed onto the dolly, as there generally is only my wife and myself on the trip. However, once in a while I do need a vehicle with a rear seat for extra people. -
No rattles in mine at 3700 miles. If a car is going to rattle, our roads in SE Michigan will cause them quickly.

Roof Rack installation difficulty
hmatthews102 replied to stephengoldberger's topic in Cargo, Hauling, Roof Racks & Towing
I will be putting roof bars AND hitch on my CMAX. I need to carry 2 kayaks and two bicycles at the same time. In answer to the question on roof carriers and drag, yes, they create a huge amount of drag. -
I like to park out in the boonies where no one else goes. Keeps the car nice, plus, I get some exercise from the walking.

Rear Cargo Barricade
hmatthews102 replied to raymond963's topic in Cargo, Hauling, Roof Racks & Towing
Slice a pool noodle in half lengthwise, cut it to fit snuggly between the sides of the cargo area so that it doesn.t fall out. Cheap, easy, quick and effective. -
I didn't know I had automatic wipers!
hmatthews102 replied to osiebosie's topic in Glass, Lenses, Lighting, Mirrors & Wipers
I like the automatic wipers, especially on the freeway. The only problen I have seen is if there is a fine road mist hitting thewindshield they may come on before there is enough moisture there to do anything other than smear. By and large, I think it is a great feature. -
I have one of those in my console, as well. I have been at a total loss as to what it is.

I wouldn't think that the rear mudflaps would do much toward keeping the dirt off the rear of the car. Most of that grime is coming up off the road as the air currents flow up the back of the car. It is a problem with all mostly flat backed vehicles. I have put 2500 highway miles on my White SEL in the past two and a half weeks, a great deal of it in less than stellar weather, and the rear of the car is always filthy. I am not an engineer and this is merely an observation from the many flat backed cares I have owned over the past forty years.

Rachel's Window Sticker is Here!
hmatthews102 replied to Laurel's topic in Buying, Order and Leasing
Convoy means it will be loaded on a truck and transported to the dealer. -
SEL, 3100 Miles, built Jan 26, have had no battery issues. Only issues have been minor MFT glitches.

New buyers think carefully about what model you order
hmatthews102 replied to Laurel's topic in Buying, Order and Leasing
Intelligent access with push button statr is NOT remote start. If the car has remote start it will be stated just as that on the sticker: "REMOTE START". If it does not have it, the dealer can install it for an extra cost. There are other posts on this site addressing this issue that you may want to consult. -
Rachel's Window Sticker is Here!
hmatthews102 replied to Laurel's topic in Buying, Order and Leasing
My car's build date was Jan 26 and I have been told it has cleared production. It is sitting in a lot at the factory just 5 miles from my house. The wait is making me crazy! -
