    Aztoothman,

I had what I believe the be the EXACT same sound as you describe it.  Mine also came and went and was never identifiable enough to get it to the point where the dealer would be able to reproduce it.

I say "had" the problem because yesterday the transmission gave out.   It erupted into an extremely loud grinding noise and warned my wife to pull over and have it towed (which she did).   It was dropped off at the dealer last night with the failure coming at 62,432 miles.  Unfortunately I am now getting the official run-around from them.  They agree the CVT is broken to some extent, but they are claiming that depending on WHAT broke and HOW it broke that it MAY not be covered by warranty.  Of course, there is a lot of data on this forum (and in the warranty manual) to support otherwise, but it looks like I will have to dig in for the impending battle.  I digress.

I did FINALLY mange to get a recording of the sound in question and have posted it in the link below.  NOTE:  YOU MUST LISTEN TO THE CLIP WITH HEADPHONES OR EARBUDS!!!  You will NOT be able to really hear just how bad it is with a standard PC speaker.  The moan/drone is a low frequency and is not well represented on something like a PC notebook speaker.  When you put the headphones on, the moan is deafening - trust me.

Anyway - the only time I could reliably reproduce it was when it was in near freezing conditions which were VERY hard to replicate here in Texas (I imagine the same for you in AZ) so I know just how difficult it was to pinpoint this issue.

As a side note, my father is a retired Ford Powertrain Engineer.  I spent a good part of my youth "assisting" him with identifying Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH).  He would shout out commands to me and my brother in the back seat, "Where is that coming from?! Which side?!  Lets see if how it changes with speed... Can you still hear it?!"  It would make my mom nuts and I am now permanently cursed with "hearing" all sorts of things in cars that most consumers wouldn't even notice which, in turn, now drives MY wife insane.  Thanks dad!

EDIT: Link to Video/Audio of transmission sound just after it happened (again - use headphones or a good speaker - phone or notebook speaker won't do it justice):

servicesd.exe, and car will not start

    Sequence of events,

While driving the main touch screen display and all display lights flickered and flickered momentarily, radio went dead then went back to normal. It repeated this a few more times in a 15 minute time span, I continue driving and got home okay and shut the car off. The next morning the battery was dead, I charged it and it drove fine that day, but the next morning the battery was dead again.

I replaced the battery with a high quality Odyssey battery and the car drove and performed fine no problems for about 2 weeks.

Then one day while driving the main touch sync screen went black and radio went dead, then began to display the message (performing scheduled system maintenance, then reads application servicesd.exe encountered an error and must be shut down) then going black again and repeating with the same message over and over. I made one stop at the store before I went home, got back in the car, car started but the screen continue the same boot loop. I got home and turned car off turned it back on same problem. I decided to disconnect the main battery for 15 minutes in order to see if it reset the problem. When I connected the battery backup I got the following messages and the car would not start.

    Service advance trac

    Check park aid

    Low engine oil pressure

    engine coolant over temperature

    Tire pressure monitor fault

    Service Tire Mobility kit

And the touchscreen continues the reboot loop (Sync performing scheduled system maintenance with servicesd.exe error)

I attempted the disconnect battery routine again to see if it helped and it didn't, exact same thing reoccurs, and car will not start.

The car was towed to the Ford dealer and I was given a $175 starting estimate diagnostic fee. Later that day the dealer informed me the estimate is now $675 for further diagnostics and they required me to buy a Ford battery before they begin.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

Did you mean a high quality "Odyssey" as in Honda Odyssey?

    As an FYI....

My battery was 7 years old according to the little sticker on it's side, I replaced it the other week just as preventive maintenance, sure it was getting weak, over winter (I'm by Illinoiz/Winsconsin state line) radio would power down in a couple minutes. And checking voltage first thing in the morning it was 11.7v.

Anyhow.... after checking around, pretty much no one had the group 67R in stock. (I wont go into the sticker shock I had when prices ranged from $185 to $230 for a FREAKING little 390/400 CCA battery!!!!)

A little less at Wallyworld at $159 BUT, no 67R and they couldn't even order it as it wasn't in their books. I figured I'd just get anything that fit, measured the battery and found one that has the exact same footprint to fit into that tight little battery tray and the cover over the top to vent to outside BUT it's 1/2 inch taller. Only problem was getting my large paws behind it to pop the vent tube in.

There is still plenty (almost an inch) clearance between that metal HVB cover and the negative post and the trim covers over the positive.

Note, I have the SEL not the Energi, I know those have some ductwork or some such over the 12v battery so I don't know if this would clear.

Oh, and I would tell you which size it is but I forgot and I cant see the label unless I take the battery out and the dang receipt doesn't show the size. Next time I'm in Wallyworld I'll look.

I just watched a video and the the guys used a 96R battery. He had to pull out a couple pieces of hardware at the mounting plate in order to fit it. easy.
