Two questions: The C Max transmission has two electric motors. What is the size, or HP, of the "small one"? This is the generator/motor which is attached to the sun gear. Secondly, which motor produces reverse driving? The latest Prius does use the "small motor", attached to the sun gear, to propel the Prius backwards. The way it works is, the planetary gears on the flywheel are motionless with the gas engine off, and the generator is fired up as a motor and turns the way it wants to as a motor; the planetary gears spin the outer ring in the opposite direction to that of the gas engine. Does Ford use the same idea? I'm wondering because our manual says the C Max will only go 22 mph in reverse. That suggests to me that there is some sort of power or rpm limitation. What are your thoughts on this?
