BillClifford
I've changed the oil in my cars for 30 years, never had a problem with the oil filter coming loose but my C-Max, in the last year, I've had to change my oil twice, both times within 1500 miles of the last because the oil filter came loose! clean oil on the rubber ring, no old ring remaining, hand tight, 1/2 turn with a wrench... Has anyone had any similar problems?
grege
Bill, That's weird. Have not seen that on either of our '17/'18 cmaxes using motrocraft FL910s filters (which use flat/broad o-rings). Greg
Lacienega
I had the problem once, but I assumed I didn't put it tight enough.
SnowStorm
Is 1/2 turn what the manufacturer says? I think the ones I've used say 3/4. I change mine and have not had a problem.
grege
I believe the "standard" recommendation has been 1/4 turn past "hand-tight". That never seemed adequate to me, so I've been known to tighten until it bottoms out metal-on-metal; not recommending that, but more than 1/4 seems necessary. "hand tight' is so variable, I mean, 98 pound weakling, or 250 pound buff body builder? and I hear people say half turn, quarter turn, nothing more than hand tight. Then 'be careful not to tighten it too much!' (which I didn't care about, until I heard "my filter sheered apart"... now I'm worried about over tightening ? (though that fear comes after these 2 filters came loose)) But again, never had this problem in 30+ years, but twice on this car within a year?! ? (maybe it's just fate or the car has a curse on it, never had a windshield crack, but twice already in this car too)
Mike G
My "Standard" has been 3/4 to 1 full turn after the rubber filter seal makes contact.
