AudenHoggart
I've had our C Max for about a month and need to go to a car wash to get rid of winter salt accumulations. I was wondering whether to get a wash that incudes the underside. I have typically done this at the end of the winter on all my cars. The owner's manual, which only has instructions for washing the car yourself as far as I can see, does mention washing the underside. The service manager at the dealership where I bought the car, however, says he never recommends washing the underside of any car because of various sensors that might be affected. I wonder whether this issue is any different for hybrids. Any insights? Thanks!
TurtleMax
Wash the underside. I always do it at the end of the winter too. If there are sensors in the underside that's prone to water damage then you'll be in trouble when it rains. SOMD
Adair
With all the road salt used around here in MI, I do the undercarriage wash after each snowfall that required salt on the roads. Edited March 7, 2013 by Adair
RedLdr1
I have all of our vehicles underside washed every time I have the car washed, which is around every three months, and have never had any problems. If I do have a problem that means something wasn't sealed right to begin with... Edited March 7, 2013 by RedLdr1
valkraider
If you can't wash the underside than how can you drive in the rain? :)
zhackwyatt
If you can't wash the underside than how can you drive in the rain? :)The only explanation that I can think of is washing the underside is done with pressure, where as with rain, there is no pressure. valkraider
I am not sure you have ever driven in heavy enough rain then. ;) At 55mph driving through rain filled ruts sprays water onto the floor of our vehicles hard enough to be felt through shoes... And we do that daily for months at a time. :) Edited March 7, 2013 by valkraider

C-Maxgo
Auddenhogart, I found this in the manual: "Underbody Flush the complete underside of your vehicle frequently. Keep body and door drain holes free from packed dirt." I'm not sure what they mean by flush. Do you think it could mean spray with a hose? Tom
I am going to wash the underside of my car tomorrow as the temperature will be above freezing. I know that car wash places will do this as part of there service but, around here, car washes have to recycle their water. I'm sure they filter it but still some salt must get through.I have a lawn water sprinkler that I will attach to a garden hose and drag slowly from one end of the car to the other to do the under body wash. Adrian_L
Why did I never think of that? Hooked up to a hot water tap would be even better!
