Battery SOC increases after rest?

Anyone noticed that?  I don't mean a whole lot but it seems the battery state of charge (SOC) increases a bit after a few hours of sitting.

For example, I sometimes make it to work with a pretty low battery, the EV+ kicks in, and I make it to my parking spot on battery "fumes" according to the gauge.  Sits all day.  Upon leaving with a/c blasting to cool things down, I usually still have more than enough juice to go a couple of blocks (careful acceleration of course) before the ICE kicks on.

Yes Doug, I've seen exactly that!! Coast into the office parking lot to milk the last .01 of mpg out of the drive and the battery is waaaaaaaaaaay low. Then when I come back out at 5pm it's at nearly 1/4 charge!! How do we capitalize on that?

That's easy!  Someone is sneaking out there and pumping some juice into your battery during the day.  My dad used to tell the story of a guy who bought a little imported car - way back when it was something novel - and then started letting his co-workers know about the great mileage on his trips to work.  So his friends started going out and putting in a little gas every day!  As time went buy he became increasingly euphoric over the unbelievable mileage he was getting!

Below is a link to a thread where I asked the same question over on CleanMPG. For me I noticed it overnight. I took pictures of the SoC level on my Scangauge when I parked, and another the next morning. It went from 42.7% up to 48.0% overnight.

Consensus was parking with a warm battery and then cooling off may account for this.

This happens with all kinds of my batteries. Tools, phones, game controllers...

I used to see this as a kid with battery powered toys or flashlights. Batteries would die, I would let them sit, then they would have more juice after a while.

It's usually just a tiny bit, but it's most likely related to temperature and some "settling down" of electrons.

It's most often almost an illusion as the increased SoC goes away very quickly.

I've seen this on other battery-powered devices as well.  Electrons move through wires faster than the various chemicals and ions move through the electrolyte inside the battery.  When you stop pulling the electrons out through the wires, the chemicals inside the battery have a chance to get caught up again.
