Here's what the OM says:

INTERIOR LAMPS

The lamps will switch on when one of the following conditions have been

met:

• You open any door.

• You press a remote control button.

• You press switch D on the front interior lamp.

Note: Press switch C on the front interior lamp to switch the courtesy

and door illumination function off when you open any door. The

indicator lamp will illuminate yellow when the door function is off. When

the door function is off and you open a door, the courtesy and door

lamps will stay off.

Press switch C again to switch them back on. The indicator lamp will

illuminate blue when the door function is on. When the door function is

on and you open a door, the courtesy and door lamps will switch on.

I still don't quite get this, and how it lines up with the buttons over the driver's door.

Who's the expert?

Who's the expert?

Do you mean the unlock/lock button the driver door?

I see you have the pano roof, so your "ceiling" is going to be arranged differently than mine, but in my car two of the buttons switch on different directional LEDs behind the central lens/diffuser to act as map reading lights. The others will switch both on for general illumination (switch "D") and enable/disable the lights on when door opens feature (switch "C"). All of these buttons are in the panel that surrounds the interior light lens/diffuser.

The new Quick Reference Guide seems to clear it up.

First, there is a button on the Ambient Light panel (overhead center of vehicle) that turns on all light including the ambient lights.

Over the driver's door for Interior Lamps:

Default: The lamps will switch on when you open any door, press a remote control button or press on the big button with the sun icon in the overhead control.

Pressing the front small button with the door icon on it will disable the interior lamps when you open any door. The door function indicator lamp will illuminate yellow.  Press again to turn the interior lamps back on.  The indicator lamp will illuminate blue.

Press the small button with the sun icon to switch all lamps on and off, apparently with doors closed, not including the ambient lighting.
