Marc Smith
Well Sometime Saturday my hot water heater gave up the ghost and wifey did not notice until 2am when she went downstairs to a squishy carpet... So off to home depot. for a new 50 gallon hot water heater... the gate would not close but was only about 4" from latching obob and Bugblndr
scottwood2
I love the hatchback design of the C-Max. When I saw the title of the post, I first thought "did someone come up with a way to use home hot water to preheat the C-Max?" ;)

Marc Smith
I almost took my wifes saturn since its a smidge larger... I'm glad the cardboard would "give a little" otherwise it would not have fit..

Marc Smith
box got hauled away today but when I get home I'll measure the dimensions of the hatch openening. pretty much floor to ceiling with about 2" on either side to spare. and from the back of the front seat to the back edge of the carpet... I think someone elsy got a washer/drier in side the c-max...
BIG ROCCO
I did almost the exact same thing a few weeks ago:also got a Rheem 50 gallon water heater from Home Depot and brought it home in the C-Max, except ours was an electric model and it was the tall version, so it did not appear to be so large around as yours. Ours was also just a couple inches too large to fit with the hatch closed when in the box, but the old heater fit fine with the hatch closed while taking it to be recycled (tried to do the right thing and actually got $3 for it, which was a bonus!) I just thought that it would be a useful data point on the ACTUAL size a single big box that actually did fit, as opposed to the standards and estimates that we often cite. Adrian_L
Hybrid drivers with 50 gallon hot water tanks?! Get with the Europeans, guys--it's all on demand systems there which take up very little space and use very little electricy and gas. Just waiting for my behemoth (yes a tank) to bite the dust. Marc Smith
30x30x62 Adrian, I have been looking at tankless and have been considering.. but the difference in yearly operating was only $40... the flow rate was very low as well to get that high efficiently rating. While a tankless may show a higher flow of 9-10gpm, it needs to burn hotter which burns more gas, so to be more efficient it flows slower. so no more than one shower at a time... plus, it only guarantees a 35* temp increase. which means in the winter time our shower may only get to 85-90* and there are other drawbacks on both sides of the equation. I have a maintenance closet which houses my Furnace and hot water heater, so any space savings is moot as I would not intend to store anything in the vacated space. too many drawbacks right now... IMO to go tankless...
Adrian_L
Good info to know. I haven't started my research yet but it would be nice to have an extra closet in our basement. Cold showers are very refreshing. I used to have them while living in Mexico--when the roof LPG tank ran out. :) Edited March 17, 2015 by Adrian_L
Marc Smith
cold showers, very refreshing when its 100* outside... not so much when its 15-20* and when you are conserving water while showering with a significant other... cold water causes "shrinkage" not very conducive to a fun atmosphere.. :) we are a family of three one being a teenager, and my folks come visit from time to time... so cold water or lukewarm water. is not really an option... I'm doingmy part. two hybrids, and 90% of my home is lit with LED lights... High seer furnace/ac unit... low e glass in house...
stevedebi
We had a tankless heater in Germany and they work fine. I don't plan to install one because the hot water tank functions as an emergency water supply for earthquakes.
fotomoto
Try doing that in an Energi! (wuuuuuuaaahhhh !) Yeah, it won't take something that high but it can handle something that long (sounds like the punch line to a dirty joke). I think someone elsy got a washer/drier in side the c-max... Proably me. 8.0 cubic foot front loader dryer in the hybrid (saved ridiculous $50 in town delivery charge): 60 inch TV in the Energi (save $75 out of town delivery charge): I was able to completely close the hatch on both. Edited March 18, 2015 by fotomoto
plus 3 golfer
....I think someone elsy got a washer/drier in side the c-max..... and maybe me, I fit a front load LG Washer in the back of my Hybrid laying on its side (carton removed). Washer dimensions are 27" wide, 30" deep (counting knobs and protrusions on back) and 39" tall. There's about 2" to spare at the top center but tapering down towards the sides and 6" side to side. The smallest carton dimension was 29 1/2" which would likely have been too much to "squeeze in" (so didn't try). Fitting it in the C-Max saved a $25 delivery charge (just outside the "free" delivery range) or me driving an extra 50 miles RT to get my Rogue the next day to haul the washer. Marc Smith
the frustrating part, that the size limitations isn't the roof line, but the hatch opening. Maybe if the hatch had an opening similar to that of a doge magnum..
