djc
I didn't understand most of this. An outfit named Schaeffler somehow modified a C-max and improved its mpg. However the explanation - removing accessories from the engine - seems to be already in place on the stock C-max design, and the claim an electrical anti-rollbar saved fuel was also mysterious. But interesting. Perhaps someone else can explain. http://wardsauto.com/technology/supplier-schaeffler-48v-mild-hybrid-vanguard d.
jdbob
Schaeffler is based in Germany so maybe they are modifying a European C-Max that uses a standard power train. Automakers have talked about going to 48V for at least a decade to power accessories such as A/C instead of using belt drive on the engine. fbov
Funny, the car in the picture an Escape. No C-Max has the hand hold below the license plate area. Escape and Edge both do. Frank

FrankYup, and the C-max is not an SUV. That badging in front of the doors is Escape. They are speaking of modifying a conventional ICE to run in EV at low speeds. SnowStorm
Ha-Ha, that's funny - an Escape alright. Other clues: (1) gray panel under rear bumper, (2) wheels and (3) shape of taillights from the side. Here's another picture. Its funny in part because after getting our C-Max we suddenly started seeing them "everywhere" - only to find out it was just another Escape! So, in defense, I've gotten pretty good at telling them apart.Of course Schaeffler's technology makes sense in the context of what is now an ICE only vehicle. They also did a Fiesta. djc
Thanks all. Big mystery solved - but what about that alleged fuel-saving rollbar?
fbov
The alleged fuel-saving roll bar is actually removal of the roll bar in favor of active stability control."Also adopting 48V technology is an electromechanical active roll control that replaces the hydraulically controlled anti-roll bars now in general use, reducing fuel consumption and emissions and simplifies vehicle assembly." BIG ROCCO
Hydraulically controlled roll bar? I never heard of that. That sounds pretty advanced to me.
