Maximus
This is a link to the EPA test scenarios http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml For the highway test, the average speed is 48.3 mph with a top speed of 60mph, no stops. The EPA adjusts this test with additional tests, one is for "High Speed" which includes a short little time spend at 80 mph, like only 20 seconds. Still the "High Speed" test averages only 48mph Edited December 2, 2012 by Maximus
Maximus
These are the speeds that the EPA uses to derive the EPA Highway rating
AgentCMAX
Thx Maximus. Then I fall under the camp that considers EPA test for highway MPG as unrealistic. Edited December 16, 2012 by AgentCMAX
Maximus
Based on what the EPA posted for their testing procedure, the EPA doesn't consider highway driving as a steady state cruising speed. It might be more helpful if the EPA also included results for a steady state speed of 65mph, but they don't. The EPA must not consider "highways" as wide open interstates, but instead slower roads with lots of changes in speed.
