2013 C-Max Bad Noise

Hi, I'm having an issue with my 2013 C-Max. It seems to make a "whooshing" noise when I get up to about 35MPH and gets progressively louder the faster I go. I've taken it in to my local Ford dealership and their diagnostic said that the transmissions is at fault and will need to be replaced. However, they did not examine the transmission fluid or any of the other usual transmission checks. Moreover, the car is not stuttering when I accelerate, there is no grinding noise, none of the stuff that I think is usually related to transmission issues. The quote my dealership gave to repair/replace the transmission was around $7,000, and I'm definitely not going to spend that on a car that's less than five years old.

Has anyone else experienced these issues or something like them? Really looking for any insight or ray of hope that I'm not driving something that's about to die.

Thanks!

What's your mileage ?  I recall reading in one of the message threads that the transmission is considered a hybrid part so it has a longer warranty.

There are a lot of other message threads on the 2013 transmissions.  The transmissions on the 2013 have been problematic measured by posts on this forum, though recently not so much.

If the dealer insists the warranty is not covered, I would challenge higher in Ford or another dealer.

Unfortunately my mileage is at 103k right now. Probably not under any sort of warranty. I'll do some research on those other threads. Thanks!

Edit: Reading over the linked thread, it seems you have had transmission failure symptoms that I would normally expect, such as grinding gears. I'm just not having that, which is making me question if it's a transmission issue at all.

Most of those transmission messages are about the same problem.

It might be worth contacting Ford.  You are only off by 3000 miles.  Maybe they can pay half.  (My Dad got his Honda Accord trans replaced for 1500 after complaining.  That year had problems but he was out of warranty by time.)

It also might be worth contacting another dealer.

And you might be right.  It might not the be the trans needs to be replaced.

Some people have eliminated noise by disconnecting the noise cancellation.  Not sure about your case.

I assume you are not getting any error messages or codes.

Yeah, I've read that thread too but it's definitely engine related. When I first boot it up--especially after it has been off for a few hours--there is a definite whining sound if I accelerate while the car is in park or neutral. Just not any grinding (or noise of any kind) when shifting from park to reverse or drive.

Hi, I'm having an issue with my 2013 C-Max. It seems to make a "whooshing" noise when I get up to about 35MPH and gets progressively louder the faster I go. ...

You'll understand some confusion. This is the classic description of a noise suppression system issue. I'd call it a droning sound, but it starts around 35 and get louder as you accelerate, but will disappear if you back off the throttle. At least in my car, where it's a rare event at best.

Unfortunately my mileage is at 103k right now. Probably not under any sort of warranty.... if it's a transmission issue at all.

Given the failure is very common in, and limited to 2013s, I would expect Ford to cover a failure past warranty. If not, I'd make a stink until they did.

If there's a tranny failure... my tranny's still behaving.

Have fun,

Frank

It's definitely not the sound you're describing. It's coming from the engine and is now present when the vehicle is in neutral but I apply the gas pedal.

I've taken the car to a second party transmission mechanic to verify that it is the transmission. Outlook is not too good, so I will probably be hitting up Ford soon enough.

Argh. Thanks, all.

If it's making a whining sound in neutral also and the issue is with the transmisson as Ford indicates, then the issue IMO is likely a failing bearing in the generator, sun gear,  planet carrier, or planet gears as in neutral the ring gear and thus the traction motor and output shaft are not spinning.   This, IMO, indicates the failure is internal to the unique hybrid components of the transmission and should be covered under the Hybrid Warranty (see below).

I'm sure you heard the whoosing sound before 100k miles but it wasn't that bad until at 103k miles when you took it to the Ford dealer. ;)  :)  :)   Be firm with the dealer and open a case with Ford as the problem likely started well before 100 k miles.

"(4) Your vehicle’s unique hybrid / electric components are covered during the Hybrid / Electric Unique Component Coverage, which lasts for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

• The following hybrid parts are covered during this extended coverage period: high-voltage battery, hybrid continuously variable transmission ..."

Update on your situation?

Our C-Max transmission failed in January 2018 at 93,000+ miles.

Short file attached is what ours sounded like.

Longer file at link was posted by another owner - better sound quality.
