Halfway to 800

Wow! Curious on weather conditions, speeds, etc.

So far most of the miles has been my commute to and from work. Weather has been 60-70F for my morning commute and 85-95F for the afternoon.  I have altered my usual route to work and take a rural route.  This keeps my speeds between 45-55MPH, however it does add about 2 miles and 15 minutes to my usual 35 minute drive. I-40 is the most direct route:

The speed limit on I-40 is 65MPH.  US-70 on the other hand had speed limits between 45-55MPH and much less traffic:

The only mods I have done to the CMax is upping the pressure in the tires to 51psi (I usually run about 44-45) and on my last fill-up I used ethanol-free gas.  And I don't run the AC.  Windows are usually down for the afternoon commute and up for the morning commute. There is a 600' elevation difference between my house and work (work being lower).  I use the terrain to my advantage as much as possible and try to time the few traffic lights on my route so I don't get stopped.

I will post updates at the 100 mile marks (i.e. 500, 600, etc.).  As a side note, didn't do too well coming home today.  ONLY 57mpg  .  It was a combination of me being tired and a pretty heavy thunderstorm.  Had the lights, windshield wipers and HVAC fan running (no AC just the fan). Plus all the standing water on the roads didn't help.

Here is my (almost) 500 mile update:

As long as you keep it above 60mpg you should make it,  may have to run out of gas. LOL If you want to make yourself feel better test your odometer with GPS and you will find out it's off by around 1.015% or 12mi. at 800mi. and maybe  enough to get the job done anyway. Good Job. :)

Thanks for the encouragement.  Here is the 600 mile update:

I have lost a little in MPG over the last 100 miles.  Mostly due to weather.  Raining again this morning. Had to run the defroster (i.e. the AC) several times.  Only got 58.7 MPG on the way in. My Friday commute home wasn't good either, but that was due to me having a kidney stone and not really caring about my mileage on that particular drive (I didn't even note the MPG's). Good news is it was a small stone and has passed.

Thanks.  With about 3.5 gallons left (according to the computer) and just under 200 miles to go, I should make it.  But knowing what I know, the computer is about 6% optimistic in my fuel usage (6% under-reporting).  Taking that into account, I am at about 10.5 gallons used. So my real world mileage is closer to 58 than 61.  Miles to empty have been showing me exceeding 800, but after this weekend and this morning, it is showing me short by 20 miles.  So it will be close.  I should pass 800 on my way home Thursday. Weather looks favorable though Thursday afternoon with highs in the low 80's and lows in the upper 60's with little rain forecast after this morning.  We will see when I hit 700 how close it will be.

The art is not to run out of gas, I've only ran out of gas twice (once for a 700 and once for an 800) and had many 800s since then. Go HannahWCU!!!!

..but, and there is always a BUT, carry a spare jus in case ;) . You'll be sweating it in the high 700s and early 800s. Pop that cherry

Jus- Is there any ill effects from running it out of gas? Since there is no starter for the ice, did the fuel pump kick on before the ice tried to run to get the fuel to the intake?

Seems like getting it restarted from an empty tank might be tricky without a starter, no?

No worries.  You will get a warning to "Stop safely now!".  I did it twice going for a 700 and later an 800 which ended up being 894 miles.   Just pull over at the next convenient spot, add gas, turn car back on and continue on your way.

Hannah, did you try to cram any extra ounces in at your last fill up?

@Wnuk - nah, no problem starting but I didn't run out (twice) as much as some other guys here. No need, I get my MPGs jus doing everyday driving. Best drive to work 91, avg 83, bad drive 79 and finish the day 65 excellent, 63 average, 61 one too many sprints and I do anywhere between 42 miles to 68 miles a day with those numbers. It is what it is... :)
