  1. You can go past 0, there is a built in safety which has been reported at about 20 miles.  Some have even reported going as far as 40 miles past 0.

Your best bet is to watch the gallons in Trip 1, don't go past 13.00 gallons and you should be fine.

    In your case, 13 - 7.53 = 5.47 gallons;  5.47 gallons * 46.4 mpg = 253.8 miles.  That puts you over 600!!!

  2. Wow, what a great find!  I always knew work was at a lower elevation than home but I had no idea it was almost a 400 foot difference!  I normally hit 80-85 mpg about the 10 mile mark, and then drop down to 70-75 over the last couple miles, that is perfectly explained here as well!  I have gotten my home mileage up to 45-50 depending on traffic and whatnot, I'm amazed I am getting that with the hills I have to climb!

Just for fun, here is the hill by my house I used to go up and over everyday before I decided to drive around it, 150 feet up on one side and 175 feet up on the other.  I did make this trip to get a haircut up and over the hill and back during my 686 mile tank, short 4 mile round trip with a cold car I burned 0.25 gallons, which is way more than I burn driving 12.3 miles to work!

    Hill near me

  3. Thanks C-MaxSea!  You are correct though, it is not easy.  That tank was 3 weeks worth of driving for me, (Aug. 24th - Sept 13th) and during that time there were 5 trips that hurt my average.

    - I got a haircut that is only a 4 mile round trip from my house but it is up and over a massive hill, I averaged 22 mpg for the trip which means I burned almost 0.25 gallons, way more than I burn on my daily trip to work that is 12.3 miles long.

    - I drove to my friends house and my girlfriend insisted on the air conditioning.  I still got 50 mpg for the trip but it is a 75 mile round trip, so that is almost a tenth of my whole tank well at well below my average mpg.

    - I drove home twice with the air conditioning on before I was thinking 700 mile tank, both days I averaged about 48 mpg for the round trip to and from work, another 50 miles on the tank well below my average mpg.

Even with the above, I still had a shot.  You need to average 53.83 mpg over 13 gallons to hit 700, I was at 54.0 mpg on Thursday after getting to work, but my hopes were dashed on my way home from work.

    - Thursday night I drove home in a crazy storm, got hailed on, was stuck in ridiculous traffic, and drove through countless puddles, ended up at 36 mpg for the trip which dropped me from 54.0 mpg to 53.5 mpg after already driving 650 miles!

An average day driving to and from work for me is between 54-56 mpg, I set a couple of personal bests the past couple weeks including a 58.6 mpg day.  In the end it didn't matter, those 5 trips over 3 weeks killed my chances at 700 miles.

As Jus is always saying, consistency is the hardest part...

  4. Well, don't I feel like the wuss!  I cashed in my chips and filled up this morning at 686.9 miles, 53.5 mpg and 12.83 gallons burned.  After driving home in the storm yesterday and nosediving from 54.0 to 53.5 mpg I didn't safe pushing it past 13 gallons when I've heard others running out of gas under that number.  Oh well, my miles to E said 723 miles right after I filled up so I hope to get to 700 miles on this next tank!  I'll be back in a month or so after I actually drive all those miles.

Edit: For those that are interested I only pumped in 12.6 gallons this morning, so my smart gauge was a little high and I probably had plenty of gas to hit 700...
  5. I'm in the same boat ptjones, I had a shot but got stuck in a storm driving home today and my normal 45-50 mpg trip home ended up at 36.6 mpg.  That burned way more gas than I could afford so I will likely end up 10 miles short too.  I've burned about 12.8 gallons and have 17 miles to go...  Oh well, there is always the next tank!

  6. Well here is what will be my best entry for the 500+ max mpg club, 54.0 mpg over 668.8 miles (12.38 gallons).  No way I top this tomorrow because I drove home through a huge storm, got hailed on, sat in traffic, drove through puddles galore, and averaged 36 mpg for my trip home...  The whole time I was sweating bullets, just thankful I made it home!

I'm not making my 700 miles this tank, I ran in the house because of the rain but I'm about 683 miles and I've burned 12.8 gallons for the tank, so I'm not making 17 miles on 0.2 gallons.  I'm just going to drive to the gas station down the street from me tomorrow morning and fill up, I'll post that picture tomorrow night or this weekend.  Oh well...

  7. I set two personal records today, best trip to work and best round trip to work!  Trip to work was 77.1 mpg (previous best was 76.1 mpg) and for the round trip I hit 58.6 mpg!  (yesterday was my previous best round trip at 56.7 mpg)  It helped that I hit traffic on the way home, the section of highway I normally drive at 55 mph I never topped 45, and combined with my personal best trip this morning I easily beat my previous best round trip.

    IMG 20130911 082429

I'm also got up to 53.8 mpg for the tank when I got to work (641.6 miles and 11.91 gallons), I'm holding off on posting that picture because I want to wait and see if I can do better tomorrow or Friday.

I really think I have a chance at a 700 mile tank, if I have 13 gallons to burn then I need to hit 53.833 mpg.  I'm right there and if I continue to get record or near record trips to work I will pass 700 just as I get to work on Friday the 13th!  Ha!

  8. Eco-cruise is part of your problem, if you don't want to pulse & glide all the way home why don't you try tapping down on the speed setting 1 mph when in eco-cruise to induce EV mode on some of the hills?  Even with gradual downhills EV can hold on a pretty good distance.  When I was coming home from my vacation I held 65 mph for 12 miles on Rt. 80 East at the Pennsylvania / New Jersey border.  If that doesn't work are you willing to slow down a little?  A 10 mph difference is huge on the gas mileage at higher speeds.

  9. Focus on some city driving and EVing your top priority, that will squeeze you out the extra miles. You CAN do this!!! You and FrBill are one of the top tier CMax drivers here :victory:

700 is HUGE. Now you get the feel of what its like to even try 800+ ;)

I got 56.7 mpg round trip today to work and home, that's a personal record!  When I got to work trip 1 said 53.7 mpg and when I got home it was down to 53.5.  This makes me really angry about the couple of days I drove home with the AC on and got 48 mpg round trips, when I went up to my friends house and my girlfriend insisted on using the air, and the time I went up and over this giant hill near my house when I went to get my haircut instead of driving around it, short 2 mile trips that ended up in the low 20 mpg's both ways...  On top of that it's supposed to be in the mid-90's here tomorrow, ugh...

I want the 700 miles to be in my normal driving routes, not going to go out of my way to get a higher mpg, but I won't lie, I'm tempted... I know a 5 mile route with a gas station at the bottom of the hill that I can easily hit 100 mpg for the trip (assuming the lights work out for me)  but coming home is a bear so I'd have to do that for my last 5 miles.

I couldn't imagine 800, my highest round trip ever was today at 56.7 mpg, I'd have to up that a full 5 mpg and AVERAGE that over 800 miles...  The only way I could see that happening is if I had a tow truck pick me up from work everyday for a month or so...  Lol!

  10. People have said they can go about 20 miles past 0, but I have not done it myself.

I am at 603 miles for my current tank and I still have about 1.75 gallons left.  That puts me really, really close to 700 miles.  I'm think I'm going to get a can and a gallon of gas to give it a run.

When I was at my parents house before I looked at trip 1 and it said 588.4 miles, 10.99 gallons, and 53.5 mpg.  I took a pic, but I'm going to hold off posting it to see if I can get a higher average. I'll post the best one after I fill up so I'm not updating my 500+ mpg daily.

  11. You know what, Coolmax might have beat me...

    Doing the math:

    My trip = 544.5 miles / 10.21 gallons = 53.330 mpg

    Coolmax = 671.2 miles / 12.57 gallons = 53.396 mpg

I know the numbers aren't exact and I didn't go look for his image to verify the numbers, but from the information I have his trip mpg should be reading 53.3 mpg, not 53.2.  (he was VERY close to a 53.4, but the car does not round up)

Edit:  I'll have to take another picture tomorrow when I get to work at 53.4+ to really claim the #2 spot. (really should be #4 since Jus & Recomp would be 1 & 2)

Edit 2:  Never mind, I'm #2!  I found the image and he used 12.59 gallons, not 12.57, and that comes out to 53.312.  That's close enough that if we had more decimal places it might end up in the 53.2 range, so the pic isn't wrong.

  12. As promised here is my entry, 53.3 mpg over 544.5 miles.  I got to my destination this morning with a half full battery so I drove around the parking lot trying to get 53.4 mpg to no avail, it takes a lot to get another tenth of an mpg when you get 500+ miles into a tank.  Afterwards I made a couple more stops and came home, checked my mileage and it was still 53.3 mpg so I took another pic, which is the one you see below.  I bet if I had paid attention I could have gotten a picture at 53.4 mpg at some point while driving around.  (I live on top of a hill so I usually lose a tenth coming home)

I bet I'll top this when I get to work tomorrow, I've been averaging 70-75 mpg going to work and 54-56 mpg for the day.  I'm happy with what I have here though, it's a 1.9 mpg bump from my previous personal best.  Still a little shy of a 700 mile tank though I should easily top my previous 647 mile tank.

Edit:  For my next tank I think I am going to bump my tire pressure up to 44 psi, I haven't even checked it since I bought the car, it could be anything right now...
  13. I tend to stick with the 2 bar burn the majority of the time, really the only time I do a 1 bar burn is when my battery is really low and I want to let it charge a little longer.  If I'm in traffic I'll start off in EV, hang back until a 2 bar burn won't send me through the back of the car in front of me, and if I catch up before I hit the speed limit I'll coast for a little until I have room again.  Every time the ICE is going I make sure it is charging the battery.

Do you just use the 1 bar burn to build your SoC or is it for something else?

Actually, I try to stick to 1 bar burns during the warm up cycle so that my first half mile or so is around 25 mpg, if I use 2 bars I've seen it get into the single digits...

  14. I'm at 497 miles and will pass 500 on Sunday just as I predicted and I am at 53.1 mpg, last week I hit 65.5 mpg on my way to where I'm going so I should be able to bring my mpg up to 53.3 or 53.4.  I've been averaging 54-56 mpg round trip to and from work, it's the other trips I've gone on that are bringing my mileage down.  I actually got stuck behind a semi this morning on a single lane road and it killed my battery in a section of road I usually do well in, so my trip to work was 'only' 65.7, I thought it was going to ruin my chances but somehow I still pulled off a 54.7 mpg round trip.

I have no idea how you could get a 66 mpg round trip!

Do you feel like the update is helping now that you've driven the car a while longer?

  15. I'm going to do my best to take over the #2 spot, I'm at 53.1 mpg now and 440 miles.  I should hit 500 miles on Sunday, I've been averaging 54-56 mpg round trips to work and where I volunteer on Sunday I got 65 mpg on the trip there last week, I should pass the mark on that trip so if things go well I should easily top the 53.2 mpg mark.  About 175 miles of this tank have been highway miles where the speed limit is 55 mph.  In addition, I should easily top my 647 mile tank but I'm not sure if I'll get my mpg up enough for a 700 mile tank, although I am very tempted to buy a container and a gallon of gas and keep it in the trunk so I can make a run for it!

I can't wait till my car actually breaks in!

  16. Well I just crossed the 350 mile mark on my current tank of gas (1st full non-vacation tank since the update) and I've burned 6.56 gallons of gas, good for 53.3 mpg.  I'm a little shy of where I need to be to hit the 700 mile mark on this tank unless I can pick it up a little, it didn't help that I drove up to my friend's house with my girlfriend Friday night and she required the air conditioning the whole way up, it's a 70 mile round trip at highway speeds.

Even if I don't hit 700 I should have no problem breaking my previous best, 647 miles at 51.4 mpg.  The update definitely seems to have helped me!

  17. I'm on my first full non-vacation tank of gas since getting the update and this week driving to and from work I have gotten 54, 48, 56, and 54 mpg for the round trip!  (the day with 48 mpg I had the AC on)  I have a shot at 700 miles for the tank, I've driven 225 miles at 53.1 mpg and it says almost 500 miles till empty, my previous best was 647 miles at 51.4 mpg.  It took me a while to get used to the changes but I really feel like they've made a difference!

  18. I typically reset the "trip" gauge that is part of Empower when I'm in the mood to see what my day to day trips are coming in at, the conversion works too though!

  19. I'm on my first non-vacation tank of gas since getting the update and so far so good.  I got 54.1 mpg round trip to work today and that included a short run to pick up some lunch, which added a third warm up period and probably hurt my overall mileage for the day.

It's still early, but at 124 miles on the tank (68 miles highway!) the car is telling me I have 592 to go...

  20. I just topped 500 miles on the same tank that I drove home 375 highway miles from Niagara Falls and I am at 47.3 mpg for the tank.  That's 75% highway and 25% city and I'm over 47 mpg.

I could easily top 600 miles on this tank, however I dropped the car off at my ford dealer to get the headliner recall and an oil change, so I guarantee they will mess that up for me.

Oh well, should be interesting to see what I get for the next tank!
