I think it's mainly a Southern Nevada thing.

They recently came back with a 76 station in my area. That station sits next to the freeway and has about the same prices as the rebel in the ghetto I switched to.

That's exactly what my boyfriend does. I would never admit this to him but he's right. I don't see a difference in performance/maintenance using the rebel versus chevron and its at least a 20 cent difference with the coast card

I'm a Chevron girl myself. Its never let me down but I do tend to pay a bit more. My boyfriend is always trying to get me to use Rebel fuel. I may convert because it does seem like good gas and it's so much cheaper.
