  1. Samsung's higher-end televisions can be upgraded by purchasing a new module kit for around $200.00
    From their website:

    "Evolutionary TV

TV technology changes every year. Samsung Smart Evolution allows you to upgrade your Smart TV without having to buy a new set. Compatible 2012 models can be updated now or in the future with the latest Smart TV features. And compatible 2013 models have the ability to be updated later to enhance your entertainment experience. With Smart Evolution, you’ll never get left behind again."

I would expect sometime in the future (5 - 10 years or more), auto manufacturers will have infotainment systems that can be upgraded to stay compatible with the latest user smart phones and communications technology (Purple Tooth?, USB 5?).  Or at least I think they should. :)

  2. @weebee 3.6.2 I checked the syncmyride and theres no more updates to my MFT at present.

From a post from Bill-N, there is an updated dealer-install-only update that came out last week.

It is supposed to address frozen radios.

May 29 2014 4984 -2013-2014 C-MAX - Frozen Or Delayed Update Of Radio Station Display

Some 2013-2014 C-MAX vehicles may exhibit an intermittent concern while changing radio stations. The station changes but the screen display does not reflect the station change. The screen may eventually display the correct frequency or channel after a few minute delay. This may occur on FM, AM bands and/or Sirius channels. To correct the condition reprogram the Audio Control Module (ACM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 90.04 and higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com. For warranty claiming use causal part 19C107, and use the applicable 12651D labor operations in Section 10 of the SLTS Manual for the vehicle.

  3. The buzzing sound is probably the vacuum pump running during the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Leak Check Monitor.

The EVAP leak check monitor executes on the EVAP system to determine if a leak is present. The PCM will turn ON the EVAP leak detection control module switching valve and vacuum pump to apply a vacuum to the EVAP system for EVAP leak check monitoring.  The EVAP leak check monitor is initiated at ignition OFF if the conditions to run the monitor have been met during the preceding drive cycle.

Non-hybrid vehicles use engine manifold vacuum for the leak check monitor.  Hybrids require a vacuum pump for the leak check monitor.

  4. May 08 2014 4917 -Announcing Safety Recall 14S04

DEMONSTRATION / DELIVERY HOLD - Safety Recall 14S04: Certain 2013-2014 Model Year C-MAX and Escape Vehicles - Reprogram Restraints Control Module. Advisory details

On certain vehicles, due to a defect in the restraint control module programming, deployment of the side curtain airbags may be delayed in certain rollover circumstances, which could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the restraint control module.

  5. I just brought (April 25th, 2014) my 2013 ruby red Ford C Max Hybrid SE into a Massachusetts Ford Dealer for 10,000 mile oil change and recall requiring reprogram.  I was running errands in the car next day in pouring rain and it ran fine.   The next morning (April 27th) I went out to car to start it and there was no power with the key.   None of the gauges lit when door opened, dome light did not work, locks did not work, etc..  I could not even move transmission lever.   It was like battery was totally dead.   A friend came by and actually jump started the vehicle and the engine started.

This has never happened to me in over a year of ownership prior to the Ford Dealer reprogramming last Friday.   It is very disturbing that the vehicle would do this and then not even being able to shift into neutral to move the vehicle.   My original thought was that it would have to have been something with a high power draw to discharge the hybrid battery.   I did run the electric hatch opener with the car parked and used the button to close the hatch.

Once started the battery gauge for the hybrid indicated it was over 80% full and have not had any problems in two days of driving.

It is the 12 volt battery that was dead.  The battery guage on the dash only displays the hybrid high voltage battery (HVB) status.

My experience has been that the dealer does not connect a charger to the 12 volt battery during reprogramming (as required per the service bulletin) and it becomes discharged during the reprogramming process.

It will likely be OK after they recharge the battery.

  6. I don't k know anything about oil. Without having to learn the entire history of it, what's the short answer of what is the difference to us? Does the 0-20 get better fuel economy?

Ford says it will improve fuel economy.  Link

DEARBORN, Mich - Underscoring its commitment to fuel economy leadership, Ford Motor Company today said it is upgrading the 2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid, which will go on sale in December. The company also is changing the way it tests and labels the 2013 C-MAX Hybrid for fuel economy to better match performance and improve customer satisfaction.

The upgrades build on powertrain software updates Ford announced last month for the 2013 C-MAX Hybrid. The 2014 C-MAX also will benefit from several hardware changes, including:

    • Gearing changes that result in a more efficient transmission drive ratio
    • New hood seal, front and rear tire deflectors, A-pillar moldings and the addition of rear lift gate deflectors to improve vehicle aerodynamics
    • New engine oil with reduced friction

The enhancements to the 2014 C-MAX Hybrid are expected to improve customers’ on-road fuel economy, especially at highway speeds.

What role does viscosity play in a motor oil?

Engineers work to establish an optimal viscosity for an oil, based on load and speed conditions. They balance lighter – or low-viscosity – oil, which provides little resistance to motion thereby saving fuel and efficiently transferring horsepower, with a heavier – or high-viscosity – oil that resists being squeezed out of the contact area between metal surfaces.

  7. Just saw this on OASIS:

    Apr 16 2014 4848 -2013 - 2014 C-Max, Fusion and MKZ Hybrid/Energi - Oil Viscosity Specification

For 2014 C-Max, Fusion and MKZ Hybrid/Energi, SAE 0W-20 is the initial fill oil and the recommended service oil. The oil viscosity recommendation of SAE 5W-20 on the oil fill caps on some 2014 Fusion and MKZ Hybrid/Energi vehicles may appear to conflict with the owner guide and other service publications which recommend SAE 0W-20 oil. Both SAE 0W-20 oil and SAE 5W-20 oil are approved for use in these vehicles. 2013 C-Max, Fusion and MKZ Hybrid/Energi can also be serviced with either SAE 0W-20 oil and SAE 5W-20 oil.

  8.

I ALWAYS found it a real challenge to convince an engineer that real world testing (trouble clearing) is ALWAYS better than testing in the lab.

Many engineers would say that real world testing is better.

However, the corporate lawyers probably discourage real world testing on an owner's vehicle to preserve plausible deniabilty.

  9. I have had my C-Max for over a year and have not had a dead battery, yet.  It was built on 3/15/2013.

I ordered it before I was aware of the dead battery issue and was fully anticipating having a dead battery at some point in time.

Expecting to have a dead battery, I have had a voltage logging device plugged into the cargo 12 volt outlet for over a year and the only time the battery voltage got too low was when the dealer was doing a software update.

It seems like the dead battery problem is a recurring problem for the same owners (through no fault of their own).

One possibility could be that the Sync module has a bug that prevents it from going to sleep when connected to certain smart phone models or phone configurations.

There might be several unique circumstances that cause the dead battery. (environment, drive patterns, proximity to electrical noise sources, etc.)

The fact that Salman has had dead batteries on two different vehicles somewhat supports this hypothesis.

I think it would be very useful for Ford engineering to monitor the battery voltage and/or current on those vehicles to help identify the cause of the problem.

It would definitely isolate the problem to either inadequate charging or to a problem with a parasitic load after the vehicle is shut down.

Remember, I'm pulling for you; we're all in this together.

  10. "I, for one, would rather destroy a $15 TPS than endure a multi-hour ordeal with a tow truck."

From fordparts.com, the tire pressure monitor sensor cost is:

    Kit - TPMS Sensor
    Part #: 1A189
    Pack Qty: 1 Shippable $85.95

Even at that cost, it might still be better than the hassle of waiting for a tow truck.

  11. New TSB:

    ISSUE:

Some 2013 C-MAX, Fusion and MKZ Hybrid/Energi vehicles may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P06B8 in the powertrain control module (PCM) and/or have PCM continuous memory diagnostic trouble codes (CMDTCs) that will not clear after the cause has been repaired. In addition, the engine in some vehicles may continue to run-on for up to 5 seconds after powering down the vehicle when the engine is running.

The service procedure is for the service tech to reset the PCM and "keep alive memory" and force it to relearn the misfire monitor profile.

  12. That's ridiculous that owners would get charged for this.  IMO Ford should do this for free as a goodwill gesture.  I also agree with your comment in the "Windows opened by themselves" thread that it would be nice if we could turn this on and off ourselves.

The owner can enable/disable the global open feature in the Ford Fusion (according to the Fusion owner's manual).

There should be no reason why it can't be done for the CMax.

  13. This is a truly stupid feature.  Or, rather, what is stupid is that the owner cannot decide whether he wants to deactivate it or not.  I bought my 2013 C-Max in November, 2012.  My manual says that the dealer can disable the global opening feature.  But the dealer told me he can't do it.  When I contacted Ford they told me the dealer was correct and my manual was incorrect.  I'm stuck with the global opening feature whether I like it or not.  I hate it.

It has rained into my car twice and snowed once.  I am now forced to put my car key on my dresser when I'm inside my house for fear that I will accidentally roll down all the windows.  My real fear is that I'll go on a trip, park my car outside a restaurant, and accidentally roll down the windows while I'm eating.  When I come back to the car, my luggage will be gone.

I am waiting for my third battery to be installed (with less than 5800 miles on the car), I have to worry about rain in my car, and the MyFord system is so complicated I can't even change the radio station without getting out the manual.

I've never owned an American car before, and I'm beginning to think I made a big mistake in buying this one.

Have the dealer look up special service message 4488:

Jan 08 2014 4488 -2013 CMAX Disable All Windows Open (Global Open)

Some customers may not want the Global Open Feature; which enables them to open all the vehicle windows by pressing and holding "unlock" button on the RKE transmitter. Global Open can be disabled using the IDS tool(version 88.01). Using IDS select Tool Box / Module Programming / Programmable Parameters / Car Configuration Parameter(s). Select Vehicle Configuration, Select Retrieve the Vehicle Configuration Data, Select Modify and Reinstate Vehicle Configuration Data, Select Global Open/Close, Select Global Open/Close Disabled. Performing this procedure is not a warrantable condition.

  14. Can someone check something for me. I am on my iphone looking at fords website and it appears that mpg for the 2014 cmax was finally posted. Just a few days ago it was listed as TBD. If what I am seeing is correct the mileage did not change from the 2013 model, still 40/43/45. A browser on a smartphone is a bit tough to use so I may be wrong

40/43/45 is what is shown on the new window stickers.

  15. In my case I wanted a 2013 Ruby Red, 302A package, Panoramic sunroof. The closest dealer that had this exact car was 400 miles away. Decided to order a 2014 and the price was not much more

I just searched Sandy Springs Ford website and they show three 2014 C-Max SEs. I think these might be on order and are not on the lot. Here are the three VIN numbers listed

    1FADP5AU5EL501019

    1FADP5AU6EL500266

    1FADP5AU1EL501020

I searched the Ford ETIS site (http://www.etis.ford.com) on these VINs. All three come up as 2013 Ford C-Max's, not 2014. Not sure what Sandy Springs Ford is doing

Go to this site (http://researchmaniacs.com/Ford/TrackFactoryCarOrders.html) to get the window stickers for these VIN's.

The window stickers all indicate these VIN's are 2014 C-Max hybrid models.

The build date is shown at the top of the sticker and looks like 120140117 which means the build date is 01/17/2014.

etis.ford.com might not be accurate until the vehicle is built.

  16. Are you talking about the 2014 C-Max hybrid or the 2013? My understanding is production has either not started yet or may have just started so there is no way they are on the lots

The 2014 C-Max (corrected the build date in my post).

None of the 2014 C-Max's were shown as "In Stock".  They all said "Dealer Ordered"

  17. I ordered my 2014 C-Max through my local dealership on January 3rd

I went on Ford's website and ordered some car brochures and one arrived with a $750 savings coupon

The coupon though expires on March 8th

Any word yet on whether the 2014 C-Max Hybrid (not Energi) has gone into production yet?

I certainly want to take possession of my new car on or before March 8th to take advantage of the $750 savings

I looked up the window stickers for 2014 C-Max Hybrid VIN's I found on some dealers' websites.

One of the window stickers show a build date of 1/17/2014.

  18. It looks like the dealer can disable the global open feature according to this OASIS broadcast message:

Jan 08 2014 4488 -2013 CMAX Disable All Windows Open (Global Open)

Some customers may not want the Global Open Feature; which enables them to open all the vehicle windows by pressing and holding "unlock" button on the RKE transmitter. Select Vehicle Configuration, Select Retrieve the Vehicle Configuration Data, Select Modify and Reinstate Vehicle Configuration Data, Select Global Open/Close, Select Global Open/Close Disabled. Performing this procedure is not a warrantable condition.

It would be nice if this could be enabled or disabled by the owner.
