It may be that the "Auto" and "MAX" buttons cause an overkill. Today I rolled all windows down and just pressed the large fan button a few times to blow the hot air out of the ducts. Then I pressed the AC button to turn on the compressor. Cool air started blowing in the system acted quite civil. After a few minutes set the temp to 74 and pressed the "AUTO" button and the fan speed lowered and everything was "hunky dory".

My Ford Touch update for C-Max finally available!
grggwlkr replied to csavage7's topic in Audio, MyFord, Navigation & SYNC
My dealer called yesterday morning (Tuesday) and left message on my machine about an update to my brand new C-Max. She made sure to mention it was a warranty item and no cost to me. -
Not trying to hi-jack, my question does relate to AC. What do your compressors sound like when you first turn to AC on and there is a 15 to 20 degree difference between the outside temp reading (88-90) and the auto setting(72-74). The last few days after work when I'm cooling things down for the hour drive home, the compressor? is very loud, a kind of high pitch whine and a vibration that can be felt through the steering wheel and accelerator peddle. Also on the power gauge it shows a very large draw, not full scale but like a tick from full. The first time this happened it was so loud and the vibration so strong that I thought something was about to explode and quickly turn the climate system off. When I turned it back on, it returned to "normal". Never have dealt with electric compressors in cars before so I,m not at all sure what is "normal".

I really did try to resist. Honest.

I'm confused? What do feet and thongs have to do with each other?

Question re: Fog Lights
grggwlkr replied to grggwlkr's topic in Glass, Lenses, Lighting, Mirrors & Wipers
I played with the lights today in a less tense "white out can't see the road" environment. If it is dark enough for the headlights to activate with the auto setting the fog lights with turn on if you push to button. When there is enough ambient light to deactivate the headlights the fog lights also turn of if headlights are in auto position. If the headlights are on manually, or the parking light are selected then the fog lights turn on or off by pressing the button. Probably what happened in the fog yesterday was the glare/glow of the dawn fog was enough to deactivate the auto headlights thus also turning off the fog lights. There seems to be no way to just have the fog lights on without either the headlights on or the parking lights on. What difference does it make? Most of my driving is on a rural divided highway posted 55 mph. Every intersecting local road and yes driveway has access. Fog lights mainly let them see me so they don't pull out in front of me, hopefully. Headlights and fog typically equal less driver visibility due to glare of headlights against the fog, even worse with high beams. I thought erroneously that the fog lights would be activated independently of other light settings. Now I know better. Yes a "tempest in a tea pot". -
Will the fog lights only turn on if the headlights are in manual setting? This morning there was a "pea soup" fog on the way to work. I always keep the headlights in the auto position. When I pressed the fog light button, nothing happened. Switched headlights to manual position and pressed fog light button and dash indicator illuminated. Maybe it's just me, but this seems ridiculously arbitrary.

I agree fully with keeping the battery a full as possible, and inflate the tires to at least 44psi. Also, if it is available, purchase 0% ethanol gasoline. The 0% ethanol gas and the temperature staying above 50 degrees is what got me in the 600 club. I have tried P & G and it works but I have the attention span of a flea so now I use eco cruise actively. By that I mean I control when to come out of EV mode after eco cruise puts me in it. I use the empower screen and when I am in EV Mode I try not to let the battery usage climb higher than the first white marker on the gauge. When this happens I simple apply enough pressure to the gas peddle to active the ICE. It seems that that more demand than the first marker just drains the battery to darn fast and then your in 20 mpg range while the ICE propels the car and aggressively charges the battery. I also believe in EV+ mode. Use that battery up on the way home and or work. The car is going to run ICE when it first starts to heat the emissions junk. Full battery or not that mileage sucks. Gregg

The hybrid gods were smiling down on me today. Perfect conditions for this car. Dry, calm , and 60's to 70's for temps. First picture is the drive to work. Second picture is the drive home. Had to drive around a little to get this!!! My life is now complete.

I have a 600 mile tank picture on my i-phone but don't know how to post it. Help Please.

I saw it for the first time today
grggwlkr replied to grggwlkr's topic in Hybrid Driving Tips & Tricks
I got the white plus sign to to flash in 2 different sections of the drive to work today. I will admit that it takes a great deal of concentration. Not recommended if much traffic. Yesterday's trip mileage was 50.9 for 47 mile trip and today 50.7. It would have been better today but I kept dropping into EV mode, darn rough roads. -
yet it remains irresistable

You know how when you are in EV mode you see the blue plus sign next to the 60 on the instant MPG gauge. Well today I was experimenting with the high mpg ICE instead of the usual P&G on the way to work. I had about a 3 mile stretch where the battery was supercharged up, going 55-56 mph, and any less pressure on the accelerator and I would have dropped into EV mode. The instant MPG gauge was up to the 60 mpg mark and the little plus sign was flickering on and off but it was white instead of blue. 60+ MPG using the ICE and not going down hill....Cool!!!

Jus-A-CMax, what happened to your fuelly avg. After that last tank you should be in the 45 mpg range.

Weird fan noise from engine compartment at start up
grggwlkr replied to dtorres's topic in General Discussion
Could the noise be the shutters cycling open and closed. I don't have any idea what that would sound like though. Someone posted a Ford service article that describes the shutters cycling open and closed at start up to calibrate the end ranges. I'm not sure the Ford engineers know what all the variables are that make the shutters work. Much debate has taken place on this forum. One variable that seems to make them open is the AC being on, and them closing is the ICE temp being low. -
Is anyone else experiencing a delay, sometimes several seconds, before the blue EV graph displays? The MPG display will raise to 60+ and then wait for it, wait for it, then the blue EV appears. When the car was new, not that it's old (3400 miles), the display was nearly instantaneous. I wonder if something is about to go out.

I have had that happen at least twice. After reading about all the dead batteries, I turn everything that I know how to turn off before I turn off the car. The last time it happened I had to go through 2 off on cycles and eventually put the car in reverse to activate the rear view camera to get the radio to turn off. It doesn't happen frequently. I'm paired with I-Phone 4. The only time it has happened is with ending the call with the right paddle. I end the calls with the touch screen now.

I wonder if heat get added to he list. I have not had the occasion to use the AC. You guys that live in the heat, what does AC use do to FE. Heater use kills it.

I notice it too. Mainly with straight stretches with subtle pressure to correct drift. It feels like the tension gives way for an instant then tension again. Also have felt it with cross winds. I wouldn't say it is unsafe, but a little unsettling. I'm coming from an '07 supercrew F-150 that was perpetually slightly out of alignment, so not a complaint just an observation.

High MPG's seem to be a fickle thing. Yesterday driving home from work I was pleasantly surprised when I turned off the car, 50.9 mpg. Temps were in the low 70's calm winds. Today, the exact same trip, same speed, same P&G technique, temps mid 70's mpg was 42.9. The only significant difference was a 20 mph head wind. I am bummed. I was 200 miles into the tank and has a tank avg of 46.6 mpg. Not anymore. Thanks for listening, I just needed to vent.

I HAVE FOUND THE ILLUSIVE MPG SWEET SPOT!
grggwlkr replied to Generalbeluga's topic in Hybrid Driving Tips & Tricks
I have close to 3000 on the OD. 99% of my driving so far has been less than 60 mph usually 55-56 to and from work. Life time is 42.7 mpg. My insta mph gauge is either blue 60+,40 , or 20 charging. 2 days ago did first time interstate travel at 70 mph. 30 mile stretch from Clarksville,TN to Cadiz,KY on I-24 W. That stretch nothing but rolling hills. Here is the cool part. On the descents high 50's on the ascents high 30's to low 40's. Only once did I see the 20 mark and that was on a sharper ascent. This was all ICE with some EV assist but no EV mode. I'm going to start taking the interstate route to work to see if this continues or was a fluke. I love seeing to full blue bar while in EV mode. I HATE to see the 20 mph while the battery is recharging.
