  1. This article says that battery costs are already down to $300 per kW-kour and "...within five years, electric cars will be cost competitive with ICE-age automobiles." Spring is here! The ICE-Age is ending!
  2. This topic is for discussion of charging efficiency, that is, the total energy needed to charge versus that used to run the car (energy out of the battery).

  5. So y'all, the first affordable 200+ mile pure electric vehicle is here: the Chevy Bolt EV. That's Bolt with a B. The Chevy Bolt EV is EPA rated at 238 miles of range per charge---255 city, 215 highway---and manufacturer rated at 7 seconds 0-60 MPH. Reviewers have found both claims to be conservative: the car goes like a scared rabbit, and keeps right on going for more than double the range of any other affordable electric car. It's priced starting a hair under $30,000 after the $7500 Federal EV rebate. That makes it functionally equivalent to a Tesla Model S 60 for half the price. And that puts it in a class of one for at least a year, when Tesla hopes to roll out their downsized Model 3. The Bolt is a practical, potato-shaped tall wagon, very much like the C-Max but narrower. Think of it as a stretched Honda Fit, without the gasoline. Production of the Chevy Bolt EV began November 4, 2016, with the first units scheduled for delivery in December. I have put a deposit down on one. Anyone else?
  6. I need help! Had service done at a Ford Dealership. When I got it back it will not go into EV mode at 68mph speed. In Nov 2014 I had an issue where the car said it had the updated software but it would not go into EV mode on highway. Ford made a dealer reinstall the software and when he tried he found the existing software corrupt. Had to uninstall all software, reinstall original software and then install updated software. Since that time the car has been running great and getting between 39 and 42mpg, with EV mode operating 36 to 47% of the time. now, the EV is operating between 2 and 4% of the time. MPG has drastically reduced. Anyone have any idea what a tech could have done to make such a dramatic change in my car? Any ideas about how I will even fix this problem? Suggestions
  7. I am a new owner (within about a week) of a 2013 C-Max Hybrid SE. I absolutely love it but am realizing there is a lot more to driving a hybrid than I thought. My initial impression was simply that; braking charges the battery, as long as there is battery power the car will have no reason to use gas. It will only switch to a gas engine when you have been unable to charge the battery and do not have enough power. But, over the last few days I took a small trip (about 75 miles) and between the trip there and back and some city driving during, I used about a half a tank of gas. While this is better than what my previous car would have used, I was confused because the battery was about half full the entire time. Why wouldn't it have used the battery instead of gas? I don't know all the terms everyone seems to be using and apparently there is clearly a lot more to owning a hybrid than I thought. Can anyone offer me a SIMPLE breakdown of how the engine vs battery thing works/what I can expect from my car/what I should be doing to get the best gas mileage/anything else I should know...it would be very much appreciated!
  8. Coming tonight! (Come on Ford! The Focus Electric is nice but its time for some new BEVs.)
  9. Did 'some' putzing around with the lights for a couple hours. Then drove the car in EV mode for 20 minutes. My wife may have driven in EV only mode for past 2 or 3 days. Got to destination, got out of car. closed door and heard a double honk TWO fast honks - Beep Beep. tried a few doors, all doors gave same double honk (perhaps car was still 'running'), not sure. came back out after maybe 30 minutes in store. Battery Dead, needed jump. So, question is whether A) how'd I kill the battery and B) if it was cumulative wear on battery, is the lesson learned that owers need to drive in non-EV mode at least a few miles every week to charge the 12V battery. or C) do I have a bad battery or charging system that isn't charging the battery properly.
  10. Hi, Just got my Energi Sunday night (today is Wed) and I'm a bit disappointed in my electric-only range :-( I paid the extra $5000(!) for the Energi over the Hybrid version *specifically* for the 21 mile advertised range. I calculated that would be perfect for my daily drive. But, and I'm driving *very* conservatively, braking well, using ECO mode when I can, and I'm only getting around 14 miles, on mostly flat surfaces, in sunny S. CA, w/temp around 70 degrees.W What's up with that? Anyone? Thanks. RJ :)
