Two CMaxes
Hello All- I have 2 Cmax energis a 2015 and a 2016. My son had a fender bender driving my wifes car, the 2015. The damage was mostly under the front, under the radiator- MINOR LOOKING Dealer estimate is 8k insurance says it exceeds 75 ration so they will not fix- (buggers). I have purchased the damaged (totaled? ) vehicle and had it dropped back off at my house - I am sure I can make all needed repairs with some effort. I am mostly worried about the car being electronically locked by the dealer/ ford. I cannot get it to respond at all yet. NO dash , cant even open the trunk to see if battery is disconnected. It was drivable after the accident, now after the dealership it is a dead brick. Can I overcome the software issues or will I be fighting ford trying to keep this beautiful little car off the road this all the way? jzchen
Sorry for the delay in approving your post! There are jump starting posts under the hood I believe. If you try to connect a battery/jumper cables there maybe you can verify if the car will turn on, and hopefully open the trunk to inspect what is going on with the 12 V. Two CMaxes
Thanks for approving my topic- back from the dead Cmax. Car was driven 300 yards and parked after accident I purchased another Cmax to replace the one that was in an accident, I guess I am pretty committed now with 3. The Zombie Cmax back from the dealer is back together mechanically, still on the lift. Mechanically it all went back together easily, the damage was minor. I replaced the radiator that was bent but not ruptured Also replaced the fan was (Housing bent up) but not ruined, replaced anyway, replaced the transmission and inverter cooler, cooler lines which were pinched and leaked. transmission filled (challenging but Ok) replaced radiator support bracket charged engine and big battery- ongoing seems OK Here is where the trouble starts: I have a STOP SAFETY warning I have an engine coolant overtemp warning I cannot get the warnings to clear. The electric coolant pump has kicked on, I can feel it running through upper radiator hose. I believe i bled off most air (topped off many times over a couple of days) I do not have a lot of testing equipment- all looks good- but all systems are not Go ready yet- Any suggestions would be appreciated THANKS- Three Cmaxes Edited October 7, 2021 by Two CMaxes
cr08
Check the codes reported and post them here. Might also be worth seeing what the ECT temp reads. The Energi models will have two separate ECT sensors: The first isn't really an ECT sensor but is a cylinder head temp sensor that sits flush atop the engine between the spark plugs. There's another that will sit inline somewhere close to the resistive heating components near the passenger side of the firewall. This one actually reads the coolant temp as it flows through the heater core loop. Unfortunately this one I don't know the exact location. May also want to check the inverter coolant too. I think some have reported getting that same message when the inverter starts to overheat. If you have access to ForScan and a cheap OBD dongle, that can help narrow this all down as you can use it to read the individual sensors. Bog standard OBD tools reading the coolant temp for example will read an averaged/inferred number based off the two ECT sensors in the ICE cooling system. Two CMaxes
Thanks cr08 (create?)- It is an Energi- I really like the plug in feature. I do not have a reader- looking at a bunch on Amazon right now- not really sure what reader to get- I would like to be able to read / fix as many codes as possible with out going full "snap on" cost. I will pick one up. The actual temps are ambient temperature - 65 degrees F- because the ICE will not run for more than a couple of seconds before the stop safely warning comes on (still "ready to drive" green car symbol, electric mode only, I have not moved it yet still on a lift. possibly the sensor bad- not reading? SnowStorm
Sounds like you need the Forscan software and suitable interface. Check the website and there are lots of posts on the forum. A lot of us have used it for years - very powerful.
Two CMaxes
ordered a scanner and a Forescan compatible cable (just ordered , amazon says it will be here at 3pm- I live way out in the sticks pretty impressed if it makes it today. downloading software now. I am not really sure what I am doing with the sensor- posted everything that looked relevant. When The car is off but charging, it thinks it is way hot - engine fan on high even when it is not charging, seems to be running the battery down by running the main water pump, i can hear and feel it in the top radiator hose THIS WAS MY BIGGEST FEAR- fixing the car mechanically but not able to convince the cars brain it no longer is a ZOMBIE! cr08
Is the 12v battery healthy and charged? With all those random codes, that's a telltale of low 12v power messing with things. I'd ensure the 12v battery is good then try clearing the DTCs again. May also want to try clearing them in ForScan. If you can clear a lot of those garbage codes, it'll help see what is actually legitimate. If all the DTCs remain, and based on some of the additional symptoms you noted, there may be a wiring harness somewhere that is damaged would be my best guess. Guest Hello, i am not logged in
I will chase down low battery issue first. I disconnected it tonight, will attack it again in the morning with a full battery. Not sure how to clear the DTCs o (or what a DTC is)- but I am learning! there is a "electronic module" just in front of the drivers side front tire. It took a pretty good whack-i replaced drivers side plastic wheelwell and the black plastic cover of the eletronic module which was cracked. The electronic module itself inside the case was not destroyed, but clearly took a hit.
cr08
DTCs are the trouble codes. Whatever scanner you used first should be able to clear them. ForScan definitely can. Also disconnecting the 12v battery overnight should do the job as well so maybe try scanning for codes again first thing when you reconnect it. The module in the driver wheelweel is the PCM. There is a possibility it could have sustained damage and will cause issues, but I'd try the easier stuff mentioned above: Try again with a fully charged battery and see what codes remain. If nothing catastrophic has happened (ie: A damaged harness or the PCM being damaged), the list of codes should be reduced to what's actually legitimate. Two CMaxes
Hello again- I have been away a bit. I cleared the codes and started the C Max - it ran great for a second then shut down - same as before, my hope for a miracle cure dashed again... Here is where I am most worried- that I cannot reawaken the Zombie because Ford has a Hex on it, keeping it from coming back to life. With a freshly charged and reconnected 12v battery, I cleared the codes and tried again- a series of new codes popped up, all of them say "permanent": I dont know what action steps to take next?????????? Two CMaxes
I will if I have to, but it was the dealer that racked up a $9,000 estimate to repair the car in the first place - which is what doomed it to being "totaled" Car is now mechanically fully reassembled- and will start- but it is stuck in a zombie state thinking it is in trouble. I am concerned if I go to a dealer they will say- it is totaled already, buy a new car from us...our insurance wont let us work on a totaled car- or some similar line of BS The car was hardly damaged at all- I just cannot see sending this magnificent car to a scrap heap because the radiator was damaged- Really would like to bring it back to life- if the dealer would be helpful- i would pay to have it picked up and towed back there, so far they have been as unhelpful as possible. I have no doubt if I had not purchased the "totaled" car- it would have been repaired and back on the dealers barren empty lot within days. They were very interested in keeping the car. C-MaxA2
Some dealers are better than others. I have 3-4 dealers to choose from and have found a couple are much better than the others - more skilled, more honest. One - the largest - has fixed stuff other dealers couldn't and for way less. In fact, and it astonishes me...., this dealer will allow me to bring Costco purchased Mobil One oil with me and do the oil changes with it. They also fixed two items after fighting with Ford to get them covered! Another time they screwed up on the time the car would be ready and filled up my gas tank for me - 13 gallons! cr08
Last thing I can honestly think of to check yourself is maybe verify all ground points under the hood are intact and solid. Flaky grounds can potentially cause issues like this. Other than that: Given these codes have reemerged and are all over the place (at least somewhat focused on the engine bay but still runs the gamut from throttle body, CHT sensor, coolant pump HPCM/TCM..) , my educated guess is definitely on either the PCM got damaged (you did say the module in the driver side wheel well took a hit and the plastic casing was damaged) or there's a hidden fault/break in one of the harnesses in the engine bay. Two CMaxes
do you think the PCHM is generic enough that i can get one from a junkyard or is it super custom tailored to each VIN number's needs?
cr08
That unfortunately is beyond the scope of my knowledge. At minimum you will need to have it adjusted to include your current mileage as that is stored in the PCM. You may very well need to have the AsBuilt programming added to match your vehicle. Can't say about specific part numbers and compatibility though. And there's probably other steps involved such as some calibration or initialization needed. Again, this is all guessing on my part and out of my scope of knowledge.
Two CMaxes
YEESS ITS ALIVE- Now 3Maxes- Zombie back from the dead Update Thanks everyone that posted- I ended up changing the ECM - but still needed an automotive locksmith to come do some programing- then it fired right up!! FYI I bought a replacement ECM online which was supposedly programmed to my VIN- - it was not - luckily Locksmith was able to read / harvest damaged ecm data and upload onto the refurbished one I purchased. I am wrapping up assembly today and will be test driving tomorrow. It did drive in all electric mode even with the damaged ecm cr08
Two CMaxes
Able to drive and reassemble - however I have one wire left over- I should be able to figure out where it plugs in - but CANNOT find it pictured approx 18 inch dangling cord to where???? - purple connector, 3 wires any feedback appreciated this car equipped with parking sensors- but that plug all appears straight forward. cr08
Posted the wiring/connector diagram. Based on the connectors and wire thickness, I'm inclined to believe it is one of the parking sensor wires or possibly the fog lamp but the wiring seems too thin for that.. Depending on how the car is equipped, should have up to 6 sensors across the front bumper. I can get additional images of the bumper of my '13 if you need to show the sensor locations. Two CMaxes
Thanks CR08 for the diagram- looks like the parking sensor c1607- I will check it out tomorrow. I was looking all over the engine bay and across the front of the bumper- I will check Thanks again. Once I reassemble bumper cover I will have 3 Cmaxes in the family fleet stolenmoment
Two CMaxes
Patience is a virtue- I am still lacking. no luck on the purple wire- I am going to tape it shut for now and continue. It is not a parking sensor. (it is particularly clean, which tells me - up- toward batery box- but I do not see anything yet- and I realized my horn reinstall in not right, it is conflicting with the foglamp when I reinstall the bumper cover. I caused some damage (broke off a tab) in the process of assembling and disassembling- working on the horn next. for the record- I did not disassemble it- Edited December 11, 2021 by Two CMaxes
