Custom Rear Bumper Treatment

Recommended Posts

I didn't really care for any of the options listed in this thread:  http://fordcmaxhybridforum.com/index.php?/topic/386-rear-bumper-scuff-protection/    so I decided to make my own out of 3M carbon fiber weave vinyl.  Got the 1ftx5ft roll and applicator prep solution from ebay for about $25 shipped.  I've done this on my previous car and have made a few styling designs for my motorcycles in the past.

I marked and cut a template out of paper as a guide before cutting the vinyl.

This won't be as durable as a thick rubber pad but it will hold up to a lot of abuse and, IMO, looks nicer.

It holds up to our personal day-to-day uses like luggage, band instrument cases, groceries, etc., but wouldn't protect from sharp things that could gouge.  That's where a rubber/thick plastic type pad is better.  The weave is thick enough that it makes a zipper type sound when you run a fingernail across it.

Yes, it would look :camera:  "bitchin' brah" with your Oakley gear.
