A discussion of aerodynamics and the C-Max

The tapering hatch that is truncated is called a Kammback. This is an ideal body design if you cannot taper down fully (like the Aptera). The first generation Insight took this to the extreme by narrowing the rear track to allow a further tapering that would be possible with a full width rear end.

Way back in history I had a 1983 Ford Escort which got around 32 mpg on the highway. The boys and I needed more room for camping gear, so I rigged together a modified teardrop shaped motorcycle trailer to pull behind it. On the trip that summer I ran at 35 - 38 mpg. I've only filled the CMax once and I'm toying with the idea of a trailing teardrop aerodynamic prosthesis for highway driving. Crazy, huh?

Good thoughts about this aerodynamics stuff.  Makes me want to jump right in with my designing an undercarriage panel to fill that hole under the cargo area and route it out the back under the rear bumper.  Create a rear air diffuser like so many of the Euro race cars.  I will offer my unused black GasPods which mount using a super sticky adhesive.  Now that I've found the ideal position for my magnetic painted GasPods I'm not using them.  First person to contact me with an address, I will ship them off.  Make this a play-it-forward sort of deal.  Try them and see if they work for you, then after you order some magnetic pods ship the black ones either back to me or off to someone else who wants to try them.

I'm curious about your GAS Pods whether  you saw any improvement in MPG's ? I would be interested trying them out. I have been using my Grill Covers for about 8 months with about 2mpg improvement on HWY speeds (50+)  i just put on carpet protector tape over my Fog Lights and thinking putting over  my wheels too.
