Ford C-MAX Monthly Sales Chart

I wonder how many sales of the C-Max were fleet sales.  I know up here pretty much no one has heard of or seen a C-Max, except for me and the local bylaw officers who drive them too.  If it weren't for fleet sales, there'd be close to no sales at all.

It sure seems like almost all of the used C-Maxes I've seen are either fleet or I suspect were "lemons" or did not sale so were used as loaners. I put lemons in quotes because they aren't listed as a lemon, but I've seen a few 2013 SEs with under 10,000 miles, it makes me think they weren't driven much and traded in because of battery issues. Most I've seen are fleet/rental vehicles.

Here in Indy the water company use's them and I doubt they have very many miles on them. I would be very leery as to why a dealer would have a year old car with low miles on the lot. When I bought my old focus it was two years old with 32,000 miles, I knew it was a fleet car.

May 2015 update:

1892 C-MAX Hybrids sold, for the 16th best sales month.

715 C-MAX Energis sold, tied for 11th best month.

 

Combined sales of 2607 is the 16th best sales month of the 33 months C-MAX has been on sale in the US.

June 2015 update:

1814* C-MAX Hybrids sold, for the 17th best sales month since introduction 34 months ago.

(*7-14-2015 Thanks to C-MaxSea for finding my typo in the first line of this post! Charts and table are correct.)

 

667 C-MAX Energis sold, tied for 14th best month since introduction 33 months ago.

 

Combined sales of 2481 is the 18th best sales month of the 34 months C-MAX has been on sale in the US.

 

As always, prior month charts and table are removed from earlier posts in this thread because current images contain all prior data.

 

It will be interesting to see if there is a noticeable increase in sales in the coming months now that CU has listed C-MAX as best 'Wagon'.

July 2015 update:

 

One month is hardly conclusive evidence, but C-MAX Hybrid sales dropped about 33% this month after the positive CU mention!

 

1225 C-MAX Hybrids, 693 C-MAX Energi Hybrids sold.

At least here in Indiana Ford does nothing to push the C-max, absolutely zero advertising.

 

Agreed. I'm thinking most are sold by word-of-mouth among current owners now. Dealers who know about them either stock and sell several a month, or they don't stock any or try to sell them at all. The Ford dealer closest to me still has a no-option platinum-white 2014 SE on the showroom floor, still showing list price.

 

So Ford is apparently "satisfied" with current production vs. current sales, because they're neither advertising, nor are they putting large incentives or 0% financing deals on either C-MAX Hybrid or C-MAX Energi models that are not also available on most other Fords.

I'm in the process of buying one (2015 Energi) and the only way I even knew about it was b/c it was on my state's Clean Pass list (NY, Long Island). Having HOV access was the main reason to look at a Hybrid/Plug in type vehicle.

 

Normally, once I target a car, I begin to see it everywhere. But in the week I've been looking, I've only seen 1 C-Max on the road.

In general, these sales numbers probably ensure that the C-Max will continue to be manufactured for a number of years to come. Remember, all the car makers have CAFE standards to meet and fuel efficient vehicles in their product line up are essential to help them continue to sell less fuel efficient vehicles that are generally more profitable. In an ironic sense, thanks to CAFE standards we are the lucky benefactors who are able to purchase remarkable hybrid vehicles.

August 2015 combined Ford C-MAX and C-MAX Energi sales are reported at 2,224, up 16% from last month, but down substantially from a year ago.

 

1501 C-MAX Hybrids sold, 723 C-MAX Energis sold in August 2015.

September 2015 Ford reported 1966 combined C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi sales, up 10% over 2014 on strong Ford and Lincoln results for the month.

A rising tide lifts all boats, I guess.

 

UPDATE: 1247 C-MAX Hybrids sold, up 12% over Sept 2014, and 719 C-MAX Energi Hybrids sold up 6% over Sept 2014 sales.

It seems that Ford is content for now to sell an average of 2000 C-MAX hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in-hybrid cars a month without spending one cent on advertising, to the point of not even mentioning C-MAX or even showing images in national TV ads, and no huge incentives to move unsold vehicles.

 

IMO from an informal survey of inventory levels in the midwest, there are a few dealers that actively sell them and sell a lot of them, but the vast majority of Ford dealerships manage to sell one "accidentally" if and when someone comes in to inquire about C-MAX, and doesn't end up buying a Fusion or an Escape instead.

They could do just as well with the Fusion Hybrid / Energi. They set out to create a "Prius killer", but they can't compete on pure MPG (because the C-Max is heavier), and not that many people seem to appreciate the great features of the C-Max design (like sturdiness, visibility, interior room, and ease of access).

 

Don't mistake my post; I'm sold on the car. But I'm not seeing the economic sense with the Fusion available.

What you don't see is the government regulation benefits. The C-Max helps Ford meet the MPG standards for their fleet of cars. Additionally, with gas prices so low, they are not pushing hybrids or EVs because people just aren't interested. I do think the low sales have contributed to the lack of a redesign, they really should have changed the body style this year to match the changes to the European C-Max.

I think I DO understand the government regulations. I believe the C-Max and Fusion are in the same class, so the Fusion can provide the CARB low emissions vehicles quite nicely.

Thanks for the numbers. So the two models are not that far apart. However, for costs, the Fusion is also available as an ICE, which means it costs less to produce the hybrid / Energi.

 

It is going to be very interesting this next year to see what Ford does with the C-Max production for US sales (or doesn't do). I'm hoping they continue sales, but who knows? Oh yeah, Ford does, but they aren't talking...

1607 Combined C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi Plug-in Hybrid units sold in October 2015, a decline of 18.1% from October 2014.

 

912 C-MAX Hybrids sold, 695 C-MAX Energi Plug-in Hybrids sold

 

At 43.25% Energi models, that's the highest mix of Energi to Hybrid yet.

Previous high % was in October 2013, when it was 43.1%

For a quick idea, this is the sales chart overlaid on a US retail price Gasbuddy chart.

 

The major problem with this view is that the gas price chart does not include a 0 value, so the price swings are greatly exaggerated compared to the C-MAX sales.

In general, C-MAX sales to appear to increase when gas price increases.
