Connecting an aftermarket item to the 12v battery

Since I am a licensed ham, I always connect a heavy duty cable to my 12v battery for power to the vhf/uhf radio, no matter if it is a regular car or a hybrid car.  Has anyone noticed a easy way to get from the battery thru or around the firewall to the area under the seat, where I will have the main body of the unit placed?  The vhf/uhf unit has a remote head so I can place that atop the dash (or perhaps somewhere easy to see and change channels, etc.  I wonder if the Tilt wheel can drop down enough to place the remote head between the shaft of the steering wheel and the bottom of the dash (roughly about a hair under two inches in thickness and roughly 6 inches wide) and then I can route the cable from that to the main unit under the dash.  That is where I have the roemote head mounted in my Focus; between the wheel and the bottom of the dash.  Comments?

The 12 V battery is under the floor in the hatch area.  There are several studs / nuts on the + battery connector that one should be able to put a spade connector on with a fuse link.  It should then be easy to route a heavy gauge wire from the hatch area to the dash area.  I'd find a ground under the dash area to connect to.

There are + and ground posts on the passenger side under the hood for jump start purposes.
