Climate control fan glitch

Last night I was reminded of this problem I've seen a few times before. If the climate control is off and I turn it on, sometimes the fan won't start blowing. I powered it off and on, adjusted the temp and pressed Auto and it still wouldn't spin the fan up. I had to turn the max defrost on and off again to get the fan working. There sure are a lot of gremlins in this car. That will teach me to buy a vehicle in the first model year.

With the automatic climate control when heating is indicated the fan won't come on until the engine coolant is warm. You can adjust the left display to show coolant temperature.  If that doesn't explain what you are experiencing then the system is probably malfunctioning and a trip to the service department may be in order.

This problem isn't a glitch or defect. To override automatic settings and increase the fan speed noticeably, you may need to manually set the fan. Press the larger fan button (the upper of the two) repeatedly until you see the higher fan speed displayed.

Turning the system on/off doesn't necesarily engage the fan at a speed that's high enough to notice, especially if the system hasn't had a few minutes to stabilize or (as the other poster said) if the coolant isn't hot enough.

Yes, the system sounds like its working the way it should if it is set to Auto.

If the fan were to come on in the conditions you described, it would be blowing cold outside air into the cabin, the opposite of what you would want.  The system will know when its capable of providing warm air, and then will start blowing warmed air.
