  1. As others have posted it is speed dependent, with mileage dropping as speed increases.  For my driving, typically 68/69 mph my mileage, based on computation using actual gallons put in car, was right at 40.

While I really liked the CMAX I was disappointied with the mileage and replaced it with a VW Sportwagen TDI.  It returns 49 mpg on the highway at 68/69 mph and gets better mileage locally (I live in eastern PA in "deep suburbia").  To top it off it carries more cargo.

  2. First Ford describes a CMAX feature in the Owners manual that it does not have.  In my view this is a safety feature.  When asked Ford then says it doesn't have the feature but they don't correct the owners manual and they don't generally notify owners of the incorrect information about a safety feature.

Second, the feature exists in at least one other Ford model--the 2014 Ford Taurus--so it is not a question of being difficult to implement or anything other than that Ford said the CMAX has be feature but failed to provide it.

  3. So anyhow, keep this experience in mind if any are nearing the regular 5K maintenance.

    Lumike

Ford does not recommend a "regular 5K maintenance".  The Ford recommended maintenance interval is 10K or 1 year, which ever comes first.  However many dealers still aren't following Ford's recommendations--I suspect that at least one reason is they want the revenue from more frequent service.

  4. My experience is that modern cars with fuel injection, oxygen sensors and computer controls cars get better mileage at higher altitudes--there is less air resistance because the air is thinner and the modern control systems still allow the engine to operate efficiently.

  5. I think the criticism contained in the article is fair.  The fact that Ford chose to use Fusion testing data for the CMAX, while allowed under EPA rules, was clearly misleading and, in my opinion, Ford should have known that the 47 mpg figure was not a reasonable number for the CMAX.

That said I like my CMAX and I don't consider my comments, or the Forbes article, to be bashing Ford.

  6. Ok, my car came with 3.5.1 and was built 2/18/13 and I did install via flash successfully and was registered as installed

so why does does ford website say I need to go to a service center to install 3.6.2?

Because Ford isn't very good at website operations.

My car was updated to 3.5.1 by the dealer.  The website says that 3.6.2 is available and that I need to make an appointment for the update.  I had previously installed 3.6.

Note that the service procedure (Application Performance Upgrade 13A01-Supplement #2) includes reprogramming the PCM to "latest level software" in addition to reprogramming the APIM.  I think that the APIM can be reprogrammed with a flash drive but that the PCM must be reprogrammed by the dealer.

  7. Found this Ford doc which states that 13171 is 3.6.2

I don't think it applies to the CMAX.

First, the document you link to does not list the CMAX as an affected vehicle.

Second, the upgrade designation is different--it is listed as 12A04.

I think the document that applies to the CMAX is this one:

    http://allstatetrucks.com/images/Recalls/R13A01%2012%20AND%2013%20FOCUS%20ELECTRIC%2013%20CMAX%20HYBRID%20AND%20CMAX%20ENERGI%20AND%2013%20FUSION%20HYBRID%20S2.pdf

Note that the document says the affected vehicles are NOT upgradable with a flash drive.

  8. I was referring to "support.ford.com".

Once I signed in I got the following message:

You have a dealer-installed update available

This update requires a visit to your authorized local dealership

After clicking on "What is this update?" I found:

    DA5T-14D544-BD Gen2 - V3.6.2
  9. According to the information on the download the initial update (that could be installed by the user) was called 3.6.

     Microsoft Windows Automotive
    ;         USB Installation Directive File
    ;         3.6 (13171) Update from:
    ;         10308,10337,11038,11063,11081,11134
    ;         12023,12047,12058,12156,12285
    ;         Other versions not supported
    ;         autoinstall.lst (NA)

Now an update labeled 3.6.2 is available and according to the Ford website this update must be installed by the dealer.
  10. The DST selection is gone.  On my hybrid I selected to reset using GPS and then manually added one hour.  I worked for me.

    1. I can't get it to handle daylight savings time. When set to GPS time it is an hour off. In 2013 we still have trouble with daylight savings time in software? WTF?

  11. According to the owners manual semi-synthetic oil is not required (Page 353 of 3d printing of Owners Manual):

Use of synthetic or synthetic blend motor oil is not mandatory. Engine oil need only meet the
requirements of Ford specification WSS-M2C945-A, SAE 5W-20, GF5, and display the API Certification
    Mark.

If buying other than Motorcraft oil you need to read the label carefully to see if the oil meets the Ford Spec.

For example, Quaker State posts the following about their advanced durability motor oils:

    FEATURES
QUAKER STATE® ADVANCED DURABILITY CONVENTIONAL MOTOR OILSTM meet or exceed:
    • North American warranty requirements for worldwide car manufacturers, including European, Japanese and U.S.
    • Energy Conserving ILSAC GF-5 Performance Standards (SAE 5W-20, 5W-30 & SAE 10W-30)
    • API SN and prior API Service Categories
    • Approved to GM 6094M specification (SAE 5W-20, 5W-30 and SAE 10W-30)
    • Meets Chrysler MS 6395S specification (SAE 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30)
    • Meets Ford WSS M2C945-A specification (SAE 5W-20), and WSS M2C946-A (5W-30)
  12. I had the headliner and FE updates done today.  Took about 2 hours total.

The headliner update entails the installation of a plastic ribbed pieces about 4x6 inches above both driver and passenger seat.  It is a major job because dropping the headliner requires removal of lots of trim components as well as visors.

  13. The following is taken from page 468 of the 3d printing of the Owners Manual:

Certain smart phones may support transferring street addresses when
listed with phone book contact information. If your phone supports this
feature, you can select and use these addresses as destinations and save
    them as favorites.

I was unable to find any more specific information about how to use this feature.

When I look specifically for information for selecting destinations with the NAV system there was no mention of selecting a destination from the phone book.  Specifically, from page 512 of the 3d printing:

    Setting a Destination
Press the green corner of your touchscreen, then Dest when it appears.
    Choose any of the following:
    Destination Selections
    My Home Street Address
    Favorites Intersection
    Previous Destinations City Center
    Point of Interest Map
    Emergency Edit Route Cancel Route
    Previous Starting Point Freeway Entrance/Exit
    Latitude/Longitude
    1. Enter the necessary information into the highlighted text fields
(in any order). For address destination entry, Go! appears once all
the necessary information has been entered. Pressing Go! makes
the address location appear on the map. If you choose Previous
Destination, the last 20 destinations you have selected appear.
    2. Select Set as Dest to make this your destination. You can also
choose to set this as a waypoint (have the system route to this point
on the way to your current destination) or save it as a favorite. The
system considers any Avoid Areas selections in its route calculation.
    3. Choose from up to three different types of routes, and then select
    Start Route.
    • Fastest Route: Uses the fastest moving roads possible.
    • Shortest Route: Uses the shortest distance possible.
    • Eco Route: Uses the most fuel-efficient route.
You can cancel the route or have the system demo the route for you. Select
Route Prefs to set route preferences like avoiding freeways, tollroads,
ferries and car trains as well as to use or not use high-occupancy vehicle
lanes. (High-occupancy vehicle lanes also known as carpool or diamond
lanes. People who ride in buses, vanpools or carpools use these lanes.)
Note: If your vehicle is on a recognized road and you do not press the
Start Route button, the system defaults to the Fastest Route option
    and begins guidance.

  14. Has anybody successfully done the second part where you report it back to the ford.

I did.  Worked flawlessly.  My understanding is that the car writes a file to the USB drive as a final step in the update process and that file is read when you report back.

  15.

How the heck you guys getting it to download?  I've got Windows with the current Java update and the Java control panel tells me it's enabled in the browser, but the 3.6 will not download for me and I get no browser prompt asking permission when I try to d/l.  After a minute of the spinning wheel I get a 'Help' button which results in"

  16. It seems to me that the update issues are mostly unique to the CMAX.  I am not reading of the same problem in the Fusion Hybrid Forum. As I understand it the power train on the Fusion Hybrid and CMAX are identical.  However I understand there are some differences in the information systems and, perhaps, MFT.

Because Dealers deal with both the Fusion Hybrid and CMAX Hybrid it suggests that Ford still needs to figure out the hardware/software issues with the CMAX that are causing failures--that it is not necessarily a dealer problem.

  17. I experienced the same thing the first time I did a full throttle acceleration.  But since that first incident of full throttle acceleration I haven't experienced a cloud of smoke again--notwithstanding several instances of full throttle acceleration.

I also checked the oil and found no unusual oil consumption.  I not have more than 11,000 miles on the car and have had no other unusual engine behavior or malfunction.

  18. There is a "bounce-back" feature that must be reset after the battery is disconnected and this may solve your issue.

    Resetting the Bounce-Back Feature
WARNING: The bounce-back function remains deactivated until
    you have reset the memory.
You must reset the bounce-back memory separately for each window
after the battery has been disconnected.
    1. Lift and hold the switch until the window is fully closed.
    2. Release the switch.
    3. Lift the switch again for one more second.
    4. Press and hold the switch until the window is fully open.
    5. Release the switch

I just had my first dead battery. I have an SEL built 2/2/13. After roadside assistance jumped it the car is running fine but I had to do a master reset on Sync to get it working correctly. I still have an issue with the drivers side windows. They will auto down but will not auto up. Has anyone had similar issues, if so what do I need to so the windows work correctly. Any feedback would be appreciated.
