Took the car to a restaurant about a week ago. 30 ish degrees outside. Car didn't wanna warm up completely so it was a cold drive. Coolant temps would drop anytime we came to a stop.
Replaced the thermostat and O=ring with an OEM ones. Same issue.
Replaced the Coolant temp sensor. Same issue.
Car will warm up to about the 2nd line up if I just let it idle and thats about 145 degrees-ish And then it will shut off and go into EV mode. I cannot recall if its always done this...

Got the old T stat out since this is really weird and checked it in a pot on the stove and it opened at 180, so it was fine all along.
Tried doing the bleed procedure thing with holding the pedals and whatnot that didnt seem to change much.
Checked the water pump fuse. it was good. I assume the pump is fine or I'd be overheating.

So what the heck. is this normal behavior that I've somehow just now tuned into after 2 years of ownership??  I guess my current plan is to just drive it like normal and see if it becomes a bigger issue as we get into the teens and then into the negatives. I live in Alaska so that will be soon.

oh and this is a 2014 C-max Hybrid SEL

You need a ScanGaugeII or similar gauge to get an accurate reading and put Grill Covers to solve the problem.  Look up the thread up on Grill Covers, it worth 2 to 4 mpg.

yeah man I'm starting to wonder if I just really never paid enough attention before. I normally have heat coming out the vents by the time I pass a church on my normal route. and thats how it is now. I'm really wondering if we somehow were mostly on EV when I went to that restaurant as its only about 3-4 miles away, not one we normally go to and is a route that does'nt go above 45mph. Maybe I'm just a tard and thats all it was and that made me monitor everything way too much. lol Not sure. But the last couple trips its seemed fine. Will keep updated.

Grill Covers solve this problem and Ideal WT is 210-220*F for the best gas mileage.

I have a 2013 C-max that I bought new.  It crossed 300,000 miles just 6 days short of its 10th birthday (the day I bought it).  I have not had any issues with the High Voltage Battery.  Fearing the imminent collapse of the big battery is my main source of stress due to the miles on this car.  I should also point out that My engine was replaced due to hitting a chunk of concrete in the road that did no body damage but went underneath and cracked the engine block at 180,000 miles.  My insurance would only pay for a used engine with similar miles, but my dealer could only find an engine with 40,000 miles on it.  So although my High Voltage Battery has 300,000+ miles, the engine Only has 160,000.  I hope to get 400,000 miles out of this car, but I will be happy if it makes it to 350,000.  I should also mention that I live in Michigan, but lived in Colorado for 4 years with this car.  So, it has always been in a cold climate, and has been garaged I would estimate 97% of its life.  I think the moderating conditions a garage provides has helped preserve Big Battery and also the fact that it gets driven every day.

Your HVB isn't going to die it will slowly lose range instead.

Our 2014 C-Max Transmission has gone bad at 127000 miles. We have taken this vehicle to be serviced at a ford Dealership since we bought it in 2018 with 70000 miles. The factory warranty was good until 100k miles (raised by Ford after the transmission issues came to light) and the extended warranty we purchased on the powertrain until 121000. Unlike Paul who commented above, we did not receive a replacement under warranty and are now looking at $13,000 transmission replacement on a vehicle barely worth $6000 and 7000 miles over warranty.

Not buying another vehicle from these con artists.

I don't think they are con artist, It is unfortunate your trans went out and I think you should be able to it done for under 6k if you search around. I got 174k mi out of my second trans before I traded it in.

My son has a 2013 C max SEL and has 104,000 on it. His transmission just went out and Ford will not do anything about it since it is 4000 miles over warranty. On the inside of the door it will say date of manufacture. His date was 8/12. Also if there is a B in the Vin number that’s a certain transmission that is bad. Also if there is a B in the Vin number that’s a certain transmission that is bad.

I went 175k miles on my second trans and was still running on a 2013 CMAX, first one lasted 98k.

  6. Well you did it. Congratulations! Curious it looks like it's about 2.6 cents per mile here at home for my FEHP, I guess electricity is cheaper here.  Also the FORD adaptive cruise seems similar to your autosteer. Sounds like you are having fun with yours. I'm lucky in that I have 5 FREE level 2 charging stations near me. I use one that is 3 miles away from work so I drop it off in the morning and ride my bike to work and back when it's charged up. I look at it as a twofer get free charge and get some exercise too, If I'm lucky I can go a month without paying for charging. ? Some level 2 charging stations have started charging $1-$1.5 per hour so we will see how that goes. It isn't worth it if you pay more than $1/20 miles, gas is cheaper.

    Hi James,

I am having the same exact problem after taking my car into the dealer for state inspection and oil change. It is charging/discharging the opposite of when it should. My leaves were also gone. Have you learned what happened to cause this discharging of the hybrid battery? Have you been able to correct it?  My car, 2013 SEL 78,000 miles, was fine before this.

Did they do an up data on your ECM?

I still warn against using engine breaking - ever!  I can't prove it but I'm still suspicious that some problem (software?) surrounding its use trashed my transmission.  Anyway, I hardly see the point of having the ICE screaming along at 3-4k rpm just to save the brakes for a few seconds.

I never changed the brake pads with 273k mi., I agree with you if your HVB is full use the brakes.

  10. It sounded bad coming back from AZ, stopped in Albuquerque, NM and FORD Dealer said trans was bad even thou it was working fine. I didn't think I could make it back to GA so I had them replace it.  I suspected things were going bad about 8k miles earlier and steadily getting worse. I noticed my trans temp was going up.
