  2. You mentioned that the car had been sitting for a few days. Sounds like one of those odd things that could happen when the 12-volt battery is partially discharged. At least it didn't strand you with a dead battery!
  3. And we had our first dead battery yesterday afternoon. 2013 C-MAX, panoramic sunroof, 201A, built 04/10/2013, 133 miles when we purchased it on 03-26-2014, so it had been sitting on the dealer's lot for almost a year without much use. This was the first week we hadn't driven it out of town at all. (Planning to do that Saturday.) Drove it on a short round trip on Sunday April 13th, about 4 miles, then three short trips on Wednesday, April 16th, totaling less than 6 miles, so 3 starts, likely without enough re-charging going on to replenish the 12v???. No sign of any problems starting or driving on any of the trips. No indication the 12V battery was low, such as the "Low battery. Audio turning off" message. I've been keeping it locked, in the garage, based upon experiences of others in this thread. Thursday afternoon April 17th, I went out to the garage to unlock and drive it about 4:40 p.m. Completely unresponsive to the remote on-key. Unlocked with key. No interior lights, no sounds, nothing. Put the key in, nothing. I hooked up the trickle charger to the under-hood ports. When I clicked the key-remote again, the doors unlocked. The center-dash clock was stopped at 9:59 a.m. on Thursday morning. I did not attempt to start the car. Got a 'Dashboard lighting' pop-up on the left driver info screen, showing instrument panel lighting set to maximum. Then I got a Starting Fault message box with an 'OK' in a box, so I pressed OK. Then I got a MyKey message - 'Speed limited to 80mph'. I turned on the radio. It did not remember the last tuned-in station. Center clock display now showed 10:03 (I'd been in the car a few minutes with the trickle charger on.) I attempted to re-set the clock from the radio Menu setting. Correctly entered the time. The date was correct, so it had been dead less than 12 hours. The center clock did NOT show the new time when I exited the menu with OK. I turned the radio ON and tried to set the time from within the radio menu. Same problem. Set the digits correctly and pressed OK. Center clock still displayed the wrong time, now about 10:06 (am) So I left it on the trickle charger overnight, and we'll see what happens today. I didn't call Ford, the dealer, or Roadside assistance, because we have another car to use, and we were busy last evening with church (Maundy Thursday) activities, so it really wasn't convenient then. We'll see how it goes this weekend.

  5. Doesn't sound like CarPlay is even being considered... Exec: Ford could replace troublesome MyFord TouchDavid ShepardsonThe Detroit NewsComments New York — Ford Motor Co.’s Americas chief Joe Hinrichs said Tuesday that the automaker is working to improve its MyFord Touch infotainment system — the focus of many consumer complaints — and suggested Ford could unveil a system to eventually replace it. “There are software limitations with the current system that we want to break through so that in the future we can offer more capability,” Hinrichs told reporters at a forum here ahead of the New York International Auto Show. “Like anything with technology, there’s a lot of evolution in capability, speed, memory.” At the forum, Hinrichs suggested the company may take a dramatic step. “We said we’re going to lead in this space,” Hinrichs said. “We’re not standing still. We’ll eventually have something to say on this.” From The Detroit News: http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20140415/AUTO0102/304150096#ixzz2z6qRgp7p http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20140415/AUTO0102/304150096/1148/rss25

Note: Make sure the windshield wipers are switched off before entering a car wash. Note: Replace the wiper blades as soon as they begin to leave bands of water or smears on the windshield. Note: If autolamps have been switched on in conjunction with autowipers, low beam headlamps will illuminate automatically when the rain sensor activates the windshield wipers continuously. So I guess you need to enable AutoLamps = Set the headlight switch all the way clockwise

  8. Not exactly. Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Matrix, and Toyota Voltz shared joint GM/Toyota engineering, power train, and many interior parts, but most of the exterior body panels are different, as are the A/C systems. 2002-2004 The Toyota Voltz was a RHD 'Vibe' shipped to Japan for the domestic market, and discontinued in 2004. The Toyota Matrix was manufactured exclusively in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, and is still available in Canada only, as a 2014, the final year of production. The Pontiac Vibe was manufactured only at NUMMI in Fremont, California, from 2002-2009, and the last Vibe was a 2010 model built in late 2009. The plant was closed permanently in 2010. http://forums.genvibe.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=33400&p=373443&hilit=final+vibe+owner#p373443 Here's a thread about the owner of the final production model: http://forums.genvibe.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=34601&p=394248&hilit=last+vibe+produced#p394248 The Vibe rear mid-gate spoiler as shown was available for the 2003-2008 Gen 1 and Gen 1.5 (nose job and minor interior changes), and also as part of a body kit from Pontiac. It was never available for the 2009-2010 model, and never offered by Toyota for the Matrix.
  9. CU recently published a very positive first look at the 2014 C-MAX Energi ... Move over Toyota Prius, Ford C-Max Energi is a more engaging plug-in hybrid http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2014/03/move-over-toyota-prius-ford-c-max-energi-is-a-more-engaging-plug-in-hybrid/index.htm
  10. Confession: The C-MAX left-side screen has become my new video game. With every drive, I'm trying to better my previous MPG trip score!
  11. Does the C-MAX even include a scissors jack and combo wrench to remove the lug nuts? Without those, the mini-donut spare isn't going to save much time, if I still have to call Ford Roadside Assistance to install it.
  12. Be sure to contact Ashley, who posts as FordService, one of several 'official' Ford reps who frequent this site. FordService
  13. Welcome and congratulations on the new C-MAX! From what I've observed, there are many Energi owners posting in this forum, so don't worry about it. I'm a newbie here myself - we just purchased a C-MAX about two weeks ago.
  14. I just got email notification of the notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Here's a link to the 'official' notice page from the NHTSA: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchResults?refurl=email&searchType=ID&targetCategory=R&searchCriteria.nhtsa_ids=14V164 That page contains links to three .pdf documents with more details. They require Adobe Reader. 1. April 11, 2014 NHTSA letter to Ford, acknowledging the safety recall. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/UCM453425/RCAK-14V164-8361.pdf 2. March 31, 2014 Ford letter to NHTSA, reporting Recall 14C03. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/UCM453246/RCDNN-14V164-3883P.pdf 3. April 3, 2014 Ford letter to Ford and Lincoln dealers giving Advance Notice of DEMONSTRATION/DELIVERY HOLD Compliance Recall 14C03 http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/UCM453226/RCMN-14V164-8777.pdf A few specific details quoted from doc #2, the Ford letter on March 31st to the NHTSA "Ford is aware of 12 warranty claims potentially related to this condition that reported noise, or a loose or leaning seatback. As of March 25, 2014, there were no known reports of accidents or injuries attributed to this condition." "573.6 © (7)- Basis of Non-Compliance Determination In November 2013 Ford identified a small number of warranty reports associated with seatback recliners in the subject vehicles. A review of those warranty claims did not identify any patterns or trends associated with typical attributes such as date of manufacture, option content, or usage in the field." "From November 2013 through January 2014 Ford began to obtain and evaluate parts from the field that had been replaced under warranty. A review of the detailed supplier manufacturing information available for the field return parts identified certain production conditions that could result in sub-standard seat recliner welds. Those conditions included power outages, maintenance actions, and other activities that impacted the robotic weld process on certain parts. It was further identified that certain process controls failed to properly identify parts with sub-standard welds at the supplier." "During January through March 2014, Ford continued to monitor field reports, obtained additional parts replaced under warranty, and obtained seat back frames from vehicles that had seatback assemblies manufactured in close time-proximity to some of those previously returned, for analysis. Ford and the seatback manufacturer also continued to review manufacturing records from the beginning of production (beginning of the 2013 model year) through November 2013 when corrective actions were fully implemented at the manufacturing facility. This review of manufacturing information identified other production dates during which sub-standard seat recliner welds may have escaped process controls. Although no reports from the field have been identified on parts produced during those specific time periods, those parts are also included in this action."
  15. Welcome! I've only been here a few weeks myself. We just purchased a White Platinum :yahoo: 2013 C-MAX SE in late March.
  16. Sometimes tempered glass used in car windows just shatters for reasons that can't be determined. Tiny stone launched by a vehicle going the other direction? Kid with pellet gun? Dark matter? Alien phasers? I had the rear hatch of my '03 Pontiac Vibe shatter while parked on the driveway. One repair tip that may save you some money is that if you have a large "Comprehensive" deductible on your auto insurance, ask the glass company for a quote WITHOUT insurance. I had $500 deductible. The insurance company's preferred glass company was going to take a week to do the job AND it was going to be $662, PLUS installation. I found SafeLite online and indicated I was paying for it myself, and they did it the next day at my home for $330. Here's the insurance part of my tale... So first, I called my insurance company claims service (because they're a small Indiana insurer and don't truly run a 24x7 worldwide in-house claims department, but use a 3rd party outside of weekday business hours) who transferred my call to 'G******* Glass Service'. 'G*******' was not open at 8 this morning, so the claims service left a callback message with 'G*******'. When 'G*******' returned my call 2.5 hours later, they said my comprehensive deductible was $500 (yeah, I've saved several thousand in premiums over the 20 years I've been with that insurer, more than enough to pay for this claim), and that just the back glass, before installation, would cost $662. I quoted the 'roughly' $300 figure mentioned in this thread for NEW glass. They gave me a case number, and my choice among nearby glass installers who would "call Monday morning after 9 a.m. to arrange for an installation appointment." Then, I looked online and got an instant quote and a confirmed appointment with Safelite.com (who I've used before for a windshield) with a lifetime warranty for less than $330 installed, tomorrow at my home. Since everything under $500 is coming out of my pocket anyway, why should I even bother going through my insurance company for the 'privilege' of paying $170 more?? Of course, I cancelled with 'G*******' immediately. Tomorrow, I'm going to let the Claims V.P. (who I know personally) at my insurance company and my local insurance agent know about this scam. The only logical explanation for the cost difference I can come up with is that G******* is giving the referring claims service and/or my insurer a percentage kickback on the total bill. The full thread including my 'shattering' experience (as well as several others with a similar unexplained shattering) in this thread from www.GenVibe.com, a Pontiac Vibe forum, is here: http://forums.genvibe.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=34222&hilit=+safelite#p382658
  17. Thank you, Ashley! Your presence in this forum is one of the reasons I decided a C-MAX was the new 'Ford in our future', to borrow the 1940's ad slogan. Not every forum I visit has an on-line manufacturer presence ACTIVELY trying to resolve customer concerns! My wife let me drive the new car yesterday on a round trip of 50 miles. 46.7 MPG for the both legs of the trip, and that's on a new car with just 200 miles on it. Conditions were perfect 'hybrid' weather: little wind, little traffic, flat and a bit of gently rolling terrain, 55 degrees and sunny, so no AC or heater needed, and 55mph maximum posted speed limit. It's fascinating to glance at the Empower display as instant MPG decreases as the gas engine pushes the car up a hill (and leaves begin to drop off the plant!), then the MPG MAX-es out going down the other side as the car switches to EV mode. That 'teaching' display is so instructive. Kudos to whoever implemented it.
  18. Keep in mind, we're replacing a 1996 Taurus, also purchased new. After 17 or 18 years, trade-in value isn't going to be significantly different, unless they find $100 under the back seat. The dealer isn't going to clean it up to sell it, it's going straight to auction. We've donated our previous 2 'trade-in' cars to local charities who dispose of them via auto auctions anyway.
  19. I'm retired, so I've been looking at cars online for almost 4 months and seriously shopping online the last 30 days. New car shopping is a sport for me. I downloaded over 100 2013 C-MAX window sticker pdfs (and looked at dozens more including 2014's) in a 5-state region to find the few cars equipped with at least the equipment we wanted and in colors we could live with. We found the best deal on a new 2013 just 17 miles from home, at a reputable volume dealer, with thousands off the sticker price, in addition to applying the $2500 cash rebates for using Ford financing. Buying at the end of a long cold snowy midwest winter when car sales were rotten, buying at the end of the month, and buying the end of the quarter when current $1000 + $1500 rebates were expiring all helped to quickly seal the deal. They wanted to move that car! I knew it and they knew it, and it worked out for both of us.
  20. Thanks for the kind welcome everyone! Got to drive my wife's new baby yesterday for a quick trip to the bank. It's about 1/2 mile from home, so the whole trip was in EV mode. So Q U I E T! Instant trip mileage registered as 999.9 MPG!
  21. Ever looked at that black plastic lawn edging product sold in rolls in the lawn & garden section? http://www.lowes.com/pd_94463-32970-PRO-20CHD_0__?productId=3047740 I'm thinking you would mount it upside-down (round lip towards the road) on some sort of bracket similar to your first attempt. It's definitely strong/stiff enough for highway speeds, and a few speed-bumps, IF you can find the right mounting points.
  22. 2013 White Platinum C-MAX SE purchased new on 03-26-2014 in Central Indiana.
  23. My wife and I are retired, in our early 60's, and live in central Indiana near I-65 northwest of Indianapolis. (Honk as you drive by the 141 mile marker!) Our recent college-graduate son lives with us because he gets paid modestly for blogging while he searches for a 'real' job with benefits. I've been lurking here for while now as I gathered real-world information about the C-Max and attempted to separate the media hype and hysteria from actual user experience. So today, after a brief test drive, we made a great deal on a brand new white platinum 2013 C-Max SE with Package 201a and the sunroof. It's officially my wife's car, replacing her 1996 Taurus we purchased new 18 years ago. (Like I said, every decade or so). We got a 'model year close out' (in March, really?) +'make the end of the month sales quota'+'end of the quarter dealership quota'+ that extra-special 'the General Manager was really tired of looking at it' discount, and drove it home tonight. Car shopping is a sport for me so, I've been scouring the major auto-pricing sites for the last three months and looked at over 100 C-Max window stickers online, A) because it's been a long cold winter and staying indoors was preferable to facing the elements and shoveling snow, and B) because eventually I find the right deal and we buy something. Like every decade or so. My last new car purchase was a 2003 Pontiac Vibe, 10 years ago. I researched that one at GenVibe.com, a family-friendly Vibe and Toyota Matrix forum much like this one. (I'm kostby over there too.) If you don't know the history, the Vibe was built at NUMMI, the northern California auto factory jointly dis-owned by both GM and Toyota in 2010, and where they now build Tesla sedans. So, I've been looking for a new(er) Vibe-like vehicle for a year or so now. The C-Max has everything I love about the Vibe: Size, the space utilization, the cargo-passenger flexibility, decent looks in the 'tall wagon' category. I looked at about a dozen 5-door hatchbacks at a recent auto show (for some reason I couldn't find a single C-Max there!) and became interested in the Prius v. So I lurked in some PriiV forums (that IS the plural form of Prius v, right?) and discovered all the FUN people who ENJOYED DRIVING and being Green were C-Max owners, hanging out HERE!
