  1. My wife and I both have CMAX's and she never drove much before she retired as her job was about a mile from the house.  Now I pretty much drive her everywhere and her car sits in the driveway sometimes for weeks especially as a result of the pandemic.

My car does most of the driving and even then I drive probably at most 5000 miles a year.

So yea this would piss me off.   They need a way to scale in miles driven for BEVs and PHEVs and leave hybrids alone.

  2. Rav4 is a bit of a conundrum for me.  I appreciate all the options but I absolutely hate Toyota styling with all the sharp lines.  Mirai, Prius, and Rav4 just turn me off.

I want to like the FEH/FEHP but as has been mentioned the insides look cheap.

So as a result I am keeping my eye on the BEV vehicles.  A lot of things are coming out over the next couple of years.  I am hoping battery prices come down.  My CMAX is doing fine so I can wait for now.

  3. Looks like several 2020 Escape preliminary reviews appeared on or around Sept 19.  This one at Forbes looks at hybrid and compares tech used in different Escape hybrid generations:

This Consumer Reports video first look at the 2.0L: version they rented is generally quite positive; Escape discussion is about 8 minutes starting at minute 7:

It appears the main hybrid contenders in this segment will be RAV4, Escape, and upcoming Honda CR-V.   The claimed 30 mile range of the plug-in hybrid sounds good.

I didn't see numbers for turning radius, but this review says  "Steering is nicely weighted, offering predictable feedback and an impressive turning radius which always helps in urban environments and parking garages." :

Thanks for the first clue.  I am hoping it is better than the CMAX and that the energy recovering braking of the hybrid does not penalize the turning radius.

  4. I want to hear some road test specs.  The first car comes off the line in Mid August so I expect we will hear something by the end of August.

My big nuisance complaint is the turning radius.  I am pessimistic they will improve it.  I also would like a bit more room storage wise.

I will most likely wait for the holiday auto shows to see that and the RAV4/CRV/Escape all together.

The plugin option is something I am on the fence about.

I don't like the cheap look of the Rav4 info display and the constant stupid design lines Toyota seems to come up with but the other specs are good.

I need to see the Hybrid info on the CRV to compare as well.

The best thing is the CMAX works for me so there is no rush.

  5. So if you exit the car with the FOB in your pocket and close all the doors with the engine is still "running" it will honk twice to remind you the engine is still on?  Is this the behavior you are talking about?  The Prius used to just make one long annoying beep outside the car.

If you exit the car and close all the doors with the FOB -inside- the car with the engine running I -think- it will unlock one of the doors..driver side?

I had weird thing happen just the other day when I opened the passenger side door to get something in the glovebox and realized i wanted to close the panoramic glass shade so I reached over from passenger side to turn car on to accessory mode, closed the shade, pushed the button twice to turn car off (once for engine start and another for OFF right?) and although the display showed the lifetime mileage nothing was actually powering down - I got out of the car and the gauge cluster was still fully illuminated as if I had just started the car in accessory mode.  I had to go in the driver's side and turn the car fully on and then off in order to resume normal behavior.

I once ONCE did this.  I went a San Jose Sharks hockey game in the spring soon after I got the car and was not use to the double honk sound.  It was before dusk.  I walked away and went to the game.  When I came back I said to myself why are the headlights on.  The car was running the whole time but it did not kick the engine on till the sun went down and the auto headlights came on.  Needless to say very embarassing and I am sure glad it still had power.

  6. Speaking of Sync 2, does anybody have the situation where the radio will switch to the phone and start playing music when the car starts up.

I am not sure whats triggering it as my car's radio was not previously switched to the iPhone and I was not playing music on my phone either.

  7. I drove a Jeep Compass last week when I was in Chicago.  I hated it.  The engine would try to shut down at stop lights and the AC would go nuts.  Next it terrible acceleration  with the geared transmission versus the CVT and electric motors of the CMAX.

No way I would go to an Ecosport type of car.
