coolmax Posted April 15, 2013 Report Share Posted April 15, 2013 I was surprised to see that the dashboard numbers aren't always right. I took a trip to my brothers house. The actual mileage is 255 and when I gassed up, it took 5.5 gallons packed and I started out packed. Now if you do the math that's 46.3 mpg. The dashboard said 42.3. So do the math!!! F8L Posted April 15, 2013 Report Share Posted April 15, 2013 Aye, different pumps and different pumping techniques will alter the amount of fuel pumped each time. It is best to either: A: Just believe the dash readout and be happy.B: keep a log and after 10 tanks or so perform the calculations to figure out the average % difference between hand calculations and the dash read out. DR61 Posted April 15, 2013 Report Share Posted April 15, 2013 In my experience, there is error in both methods for any given tank. I record both for my cars and then calculate overall average . I try to be consistant with fillup technique. After many fillups the overall average of gallons pumped and miles will be close to correct. Then error for the car's display can be calculated.
