Questions about Nav system

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me if the Navigation in the C-Max gives real-time traffic info? If it does, is it a subscription item (Sirius) or would it work without any subscription?

Also, does it show what lane of a multi-lane freeway you need to be in for an upcoming interchange or exit?

We have a 2013 SE without Nav but a local shop that was recommended by our Ford dealer will put the Ford Nav in for a better price than the dealer. Just want to make sure it will do what we want before ordering it. Other than not having the Nav we're very happy with the car.

Um, are you sure about that?

While I do have the Sirius install, I've never activated it and yet the Nav system does show traffic and other issues (like current construction).  My own particular hunch is that it's coming from the SYNC (which I do have an account) but I've never taken the time to fully investigate (having only had the car about a week -- I'll get to it).

Would Sirius show traffic even if not activated?

As homestead said, it's activated for free to entice you to keep it.   BTW, if you or others don't know, go into the nav menu, select sirius travel link, then weather to see a real time weather radar.  Very, very cool and informative.  You can zoom in/out and while stopped move the map around.

Um, still don't know about that.

According to the Ford site, you need to register your Sirius account online (which I have not done and which the dealer did not do because when I bought it even THEY were unsure whether I had Sirius or not).  Wife has the C-Max at work so I can't check further, but I will when she gets home.  I would suspect that *someone* has to register it because otherwise how would they know when it started?

To get started, register your account online at siriusxm.com/GetAllAccess

Did the dealer ask you for an email and password when you took delivery? That is to register your sync account. Traffic is a feature of Sirius which is automatically activated when you make your purchase. At least that's how my last two Fords were.

What package do you have in your Cmax? i.e 203A, 302A etc?

The trip link costs around $70 a year.  When we were out west on vacation, and wanted to go see a movie in the evening, we searched Sirius for the nearest theaters and what was showing, and set the NAV to that location.  The weather map also comes in handy.  In regards to traffic, we do get an occassional alert in route if there is construction, etc.  I'm think we've gotten alerts to accidents but I'm not sure.

I've gotten alerts for travel. It then asks if you want to avoid or ignore it. If you hit avoid it re-routes the nav to miss the problem. Many times I've decided to ignore and when I get there, no accident in site. Also not sure that the detours that it routes are the most efficient.

I have the Nav system AND Sirius, but I'm fairly sure Sirius is not activated -- I do not believe it is activated at the same time SYNC is (because they are two separate entities).  I will check later, though (too busy tonight).

Quite honestly, there is nothing either SYNC nor Sirius can offer me I can't get better/faster/cheaper on my phone, so I'm of the opinion that I won't be paying for anything anyway.

This was also my experience.

You talking to me?  (I sound like De Niro).  If so, no, I haven't tried using my phone as a hotspot for SYNC.  I read about using the phone for a wi-fi hotspot, but I thought your phone had to support this (and I don't think mine does).  But perhaps SYNC is different.  And I don't know why I'd want to (more stuff to read and absorb)
