Why I'm glad they got rid of the lifetime MPG...

I had gotten our average MPG up to 43.0 (from the low 30's when it was first driven out 200 miles to us by a Ford employee.  Sigh) and yesterday my DW had it ONE DAY to drive to work.  The round trip is about 22 miles, but she did do some shopping during her lunch hour.  This morning it was at 42.7.

 

Now, granted, we only have 1200 miles on Maximis so far, but how could she do so much damage in so little miles?  She had to have been averaging in the mid 30's, on a drive I can typically easily get in the 50's (her drive to work is mostly city with about 2 miles of highway at 55 mph... at least that's the POSTED limit.  She's already gotten pulled over in that short stretch for speeding, in our Durango).

 

I'll build it up again, but I can see that letting her drive is always going to bring me down so far I just don't want to share with anyone (someone asked me the other day what kind of mileage I got and I said "Well, *I'm* averaging around 47 mpg with the A/C running high in both city and highway driving, and in the mid 50's in the city" but when he wanted to see the car I didn't have the heart to even turn it on and have it make a liar out of me.

 

I wish we could afford to have two new cars but since we have to share and since she wants to drive it just a little (even though she always says "well, it's YOUR car") I'm always going to feel like it's an uphill battle.  Right now I'm thinking of resetting the average MPG after every time she drives (because otherwise it just isn't accurate at all -- heck, I might as well let the CR people be doing the driving <bg>).

 

(I might get a break in a few weeks -- personalized plates are coming for our Durango and they are ones she *really* wanted.  At the time she thought they were going on Maximis, but I've already reserved THAT plate for it and it can't very well go on the other vehicle, can it?  So perhaps she'll be more tempted to get into it instead :>).

Give her time. Eventually she may come around. My wife obliterated the mileage on quite a few tanks for me, but being persistent and supportive seems to be working. The other day (first real trip since my 634 tank), she had an 80 mile run at 46.2 mpg, so try to be positive and maybe show a few pointers. :)

And sorry, Xym, but I'm afraid at her age there's no hope.  LOL.  I've been battled Lead Foot Annie on this point for too many decades now.  She'll just never learn (and doesn't really care, even when she has to spend $$$ shoveling money into the Durango's gas tank).

My precious wife put the first 6600 miles on her Cmax. (I had no interest in the funny little car. But she loved it. and THAT is what mattered to me)

Then the "funny little car" became mine.

When I first drove it, I noticed that Trip 1 and Empower had the same mpg. And trip 1 had the total miles of the car in it. She had never hit "reset" (that is so her, by the way)

 

The mpg (lifetime) was 40.2

At the time, I thought that was impressive! (little did I know)

 

Anyways, I will NEVER hit reset. And I will warn the techs that do my service to NEVER hit reset. Kind of sounds silly, I know, but those 6600 miles are hers. And now part of her legacy. I want them to be a part of the lifetime sample.

 

I can always just use the trip 1 or trip 2 to save my own mpg samples.

 

Proud to say that the lifetime has increased to 43.8 as of this morning. I smile and think of her everytime it clicks up a tenth. I figure she grins and calls me smarty pants.

Kellytoons, do you have the right side screen set to show those amazing "Efficiency Leaves"?  They have subliminal power beyond anything we can imagine!  Shucks, in a few months there'll be real leaves commin' outa the air vents!  You'll be in the dog house for pulling down her average. :lol:

Who needs artificial, LCD leaves...when you can have - REAL - leaves. Yes, they are coming into Maxine though ever the gap. Don't know why..but maybe parking under a tree when its 100+ heat here may have some wee-thing to do with it  :)

 

ps guys with less than 10K on the odo, don't fret about the Lifetime MPG. Remember, you are NOT suppose to be above 38MPG, not possible says you-know-who. If you do, thank the Lord and Ford for such a great car  :rockon:

Never really thought of it that way Snowstorm, I think you have hit on it for some - at least perhaps the gardening types (at least one could hope/try).  Thanks for the reminder.  Nick  (OK, OK, probably very wishful thinking)

Actually, I now have to apologize to my wife in public (although she'll never see this -- I already apologized to her in person this morning).

 

I got into the car after her trip to her doctor this morning (I'm guessing it's about a 40 mile trip, 20 miles each way) and the MPG was back up to 43.0.  On the nose.  She did it, bless her, from the 42.8 which I got it back to after driving it a bit this morning myself.  I asked her how and she said "I didn't do anything special -- just drove the way I always did.  But I noticed I got 50 something on the trip back, and my brake score was 96."  Those kind of stats for her is amazing.

 

After taking it to the vet this afternoon I got it to 43.2 so we're making progress.  But I guess I won't be as hard on her anymore and I'm really sorry I brought it up here (but she DOES have a lead foot -- so perhaps Maximis is teaching her good habits after all).

We live in the "Hill Country" of Florida! My Wife is actually blaming her poor mileage on the terrain! BTW, she still gets around 43 mpg so I can't really complain too much.

My biggest problem is that she won't use the Sunshade that I paid $40 dollars for!!! :lol:

So now take a measuring roller and redo all those 4500 miles to make sure that even that is right ;)

 

..and lay off that whatever-drink they are serving in that 600+ CMax club :)

Seriously, I don't understand why Ford is not advertising the CMax more. At least they aren't here in PA. This car has such great potential yet they seem to want to keep it low key. Makes no sense.

They don't advertise it nationally much -- if you want all the commercials they have been rolling out (their "Summer Movie Spectacular" or such thingee) there is only one that has the C-Max in it, and only so very briefly it's not clear what it actually is.

 

I hope Ford doesn't give up on this car.  I really want to buy the 2019 version of it (about the time I can afford another new car).

It just seems so odd they aren't more actively pushing this vehicle.

Oh, I'm doing my bit.  As I said in another thread, I have a tennis buddy who is going to speak with my Ford salesperson soon, he was so impressed with a ride in Maximis.

 

But it is a bit of a mystery why it isn't getting talked about more.  Heck, even *I* remember all the Prius hubbub when it first came out, that's all you ever heard.  Why folks aren't clamoring for this vehicle I just don't understand.

If you think about it, low-key advertising might be a smart move:

- the car uses a lot of neodymiuim, a rare earth element which comes out of China, and is critical to small, powerful electric motors also used in things lke smart bombs and drones

- China has a history of managing exports for political purposes

- any mass-produced product line is in serious jeopardy when a critical component is single-sourced, and subject to short-term shortages and price increases

- electric vehicle incentive programs have production limits, making the plug-ins a better deal only until they get popular

A smart company would manage each product line to maximize total profit, while minimizing profit risk due to external factors beyond their control, like trade issues and availability fluctuations. Ford is fairly smart, judging by how they dealt with the EPA ratings issues (no comment on how they got themselves into it).

Tell her the hills are the secret to great mileage

NYS is not flat, but I live and drive in the flat part south of Lake Ontario (western half of the state). The secret is to ICE up the shallow hills so you crest the hill with both speed and charge, to go with the altitude. Any of the three will make for long EV glides, but all three are incredibly effective. My 700 mile tank was74$ EV with 10% regen, averaging 30 mph. Jus gets 80% EV with 15% regen in what he's reported, but also at lower speed.
